243 fazination???

5.56 was chosen for firepower over 'stopping' power. We wanted a 6.5 or 7mm preferring aimed shots over cover fire.
The Nato round can pierce armour but it is widely known to wound not kill, it's primary intention. It just pencils through.
But irrelevant in this discussion anyway.

I think the choice of the 5.6 was also due to shootability, the ordinary soldier will have a higher chance of hitting the intended target vs say a 7.62. The average soldier under stress will benefit from more ammo and lower recoiling rifle. Many reports that I read seemed to indicate that the FMJ from 5.56 tended to tumble and often fragment inside flesh rather than just pencil through. I also don't think wounding is an objective, main objective is to win a battle and avoid being shot/wounded.
Anyway...a 5.56 has way more "stopping power" than a 7.62 missing or out of ammo.

The 243 is an excellent round for its intended purpose, Varmint shooting, its also very good for small and medium deer but is to small to encompass "ALL" UK deer species, there are much better rounds to fit the bill as an "ALL" deer species cartridge, the best IMO being the 270.

Ian.

Ian,

I love you like a brother but can I lure you from the dark side over to the 0.284 diamtere?

Shot a little 4 point Coues Whitetail Saturday. Range just over 200 yds. 165gr Sierra BTHP Gameking went through both lungs with a 1" diamtere exit. Deer dropped on the spot. The smaller 308 offshoot likely as not would not have been as efficient.

This past Saturday I spent a couple of hours hitting the local WalMart stores looking for 22 ammunition. Of course I had to peruse the gun cabinets looking for bargains. None found but I did note the only 243's that had on dispaly were the "youth" models with short stocks...

I shot a little doe at 200 yards (165m to be exact) with a 243 100g Federal Power Shoc a couple of weeks ago

We found it dead about 4 yards from where i shot it

My shot hit the heart but thats not surprising as the 243 100g is much more accurate over that range ;)

NEWS FLash!!!

Winchester has announced a recall of the 243 W cartridge. All ammuniton and rifles are affected, other manufacturers of 243W rifles and ammunition are being encouraged to do the same. Seems the 243W was contributing to shooter overconfidence resulting in many lost deer, shooters somehow do not understand the cartridge was developed for small varmints, also suspected of spawning the metrosexual. Winchester has not revealed any compensation plans but insiders say the costs to return the guns and ammuition directly to the factory for refitting to either 308 or 358 Winchester will not be extreme. For those unable to cope with the recoil generated by either caliber Winchester has coordinated with Daisy and will be able to provide a new BB gun in exchage at only a slight addition charge. Another option will be to return rifles or ammuniton without getting replacements back. For this the return charge will be $20 plus postage and handling.

Go Large or Go Home - I've heard a few guys say this - I'm a believer in 'horses for courses' and am happy to take the 2 minutes to switch barrells depending on what's in season....
