243 fazination???

I really like the G3, especially the 14.4 inch barreled version with collapsible stock. The 10th Special Forces Group bought a number during the Cold War but they werr never issued, politics.... The two down sides were the muzzle blast with the short barrel and the 2nd generation collapsible stock with the reverse curve buttplate. I have several frineds in Germany with the civilian version sold as the "officer's model" and they are very accurate despite the short barrel.

We also had MG3's that I like alot but the MAG58 is more practical for troops that have to carry their weapons with it's slower cyclic.

The UZI is a 1950's design that is very reliable but cannot be compared the more modern design. FWIW: The CAR15 with either the 10.5 or the 11.5 inch barrels were classifed as SMGs.

I have not fired the STG 90 but have quite a bit of experience with the SIG 556 series. Great guns but too expensive.

The M16/M4 have been in service now for more than 50 years so the design is pretty solid. Although the gas pistol versions are cleaner I don't consider it worth the additional cost especially not for a civilian who can clean his rifle as often as required without risking life and limb.

The M14 is a pretty robust design but production was actually halted because of quality issues, not becasue the M16 was beigng adopt. Great explanation in the book The Great Rifle Controversy" by CLinton Ezell.

Interesting, thanks.

It was sensible, unavoidable even, to standardise with NATO.
Was it as sensible of NATO to insist on a full-fat .30 to standardise on?

Perhaps not but after WWII when the US was providing aid to half of thw World, perhaps it was unavoidable that the wishing of the US were acquiesced to. I do not know if a single country has repaid the loans that were provided to them either during or after the war. I think most were forgivwen or written off...

maybe if they'd got involved sooner we could have beaten the Nazis at a far lower cost in personnel and money ?

As far as I know Germany had paid up all debt's for War reparations etc. in 1988. Recon they are saving for the Euro fiasco....

I believe in 1988 they were forgiven. Even were that true the US has still been sunsidizing Germany's security since then. If they has not the Russians would have entered (enslaved) Germany in 1945/6 or after. At one point the US had more than 277,000 troops in Germany. I wonder how many US troops have died in accidents in Germany either training related or otherwise since WWII. Sure you can say that some were not service related but if they were not there in the first palce the likelihood is great they would have not died.

In 1985 I was at a birthday party for one of my longest and best friends (a forester near Munich) when his brother in law (who did no live in Germany) came to me and said "the war ended in 1945, howcome the US is still here?" I responded with "if the German Government wanted the US to leave we would. Then Germany could pay for it's own security, until then, the US is stuck defending you." There is a great difference in awareness between the younger Germans and the older Generation that lived through the war and it's aftermath. I suspect the younger generation are all drawn to the 243....
