243 fazination???

Do bullets not traditionally fit into the grooves, rather than just between the lands?
The 6mm bullets I have are according to my micrometer 0.2435"

If it says 6mm on the box...
... then someone has some explaining to do or it's time for a new micrometer

Aye no worries. .236" or 6mm is the bore diameter, whilst the bullet diameter (and barrel groove diameter) is .243" or 6.17mm. Same thing with other calibres eg. .30 (7.62mm) bore and .308 (7.82mm) bullet

Just re-name it the MARCBO/MUNGO thread, and let it run...

Every time I log in and check up on this discussion I find another good argument that makes me glad I chose .243

Are you really that unsure of your selection that you need to keep checking back for validation?

Retro - now we're talkin'! At the risk of starting a major controversy on this civilized thread, I'd like to offer my thoughts on the best cartridge/rifle combination for deer (all of 'em). The .30-30 Winchester. Model 94 or Marlin only. Iron sights. Big bullet, slow, lots of energy and great out to proper stalking range (150 yards or less).

Thats very US centric. In the Commonwealth countries the 303 Brit would win that "retro" discussion by a country mile.

The 30 30 is a round that I've rediscovered in the last several years & love it now, I would choose it over a pope gun for deer. I'd even use a 30 30 with good 170 grain projectiles on elk if the shots were less than 100m, but not on the smaller sambar stags. The muscle & bone density in sambar will absorb a lot more punishment. I can't discuss Moose, but I am reliably informed they are relatively soft. A 303 is still much more gun than the 30 30 & I'd use the Brit with 220 grn projectiles on sambar without a concern.

I continually find it amusing when folks compare animals of similar size when discussing calibers in threads like this ("its the same size as a goat pig ect so it must a good caliber for this species too"),it's not like that in the real world, some species can absorb much more energy than others of similar size. My own theory is that those which are the prey of tigers in their indigenous range, are much much harder to kill than the species which are prey to other predators.

Again the Pope gun continues to create thread drift & much discussion. Why the continual calls to close this thread? Everyone has been playing nicely so far?

Sharkey,

At the current time I do not have an adequate response to your post. Please check back in a couple days when I shall post a witty and blistering retort that will leave you devastated. I assure you it will contain an appropriate number of idioms to ensure no one else but me gets it. I will focus on your assessment of the adequacy of the .30-30 on sambar despite my complete lack of experience hunting this animal. Further, I will proclaim the absolute superiority (or adequacy, I haven't decided which) of the .30-30 on all creatures great and small. Finally, I will negate your ballistic knowledge by throwing a tantrum.

(Now that's a humorous post!)

Well played Sir.

I have to critique you on this though.
I will proclaim the absolute superiority (or adequacy, I haven't decided which) of the .30-30 on all creatures great and small.

We can only have one "Pope" gun, & the 243 already has the keyboard reputation for the "all creatures great & small" title. Besides, I'm not aware of any of the Popes using the 30 30, whereas, in the hands of a Pope the 243 strikes down like the hand of God.

Cheers

506 replies, 25950 views, surely this has been done to death admin?

I disagree.

Whilst at times there's been some frank exchanging of views in this thread, on the whole it has been both humorous and enjoyable. Marcbo and I might differ in our opinions of the relative merits of a particular caliber, but that doesn't present me from finding his insight and observations both informative and thought-provoking, all the more so because he's bringing a U.S. perspective to things. More power to him for that!

Surely that's the whole point of a forum?

Sharkey,

Sir, logic and reason are inadequate to defend your argument, All justification must rely completely on emotional attachment, irrational reasoning, and fuzzy math. Besides, my imaginary friend is better than your imaginary friend.

MARCBO, you are a luddite and I approve.

If you can only have one "Pope" gun (I'm going to pretend I know what that means, see above) and it's a 243, well, you better be shooting it. A lot. Mostly because shooting is fun, hunting is funner, and doing neither makes for a rather bleak lifestyle.

I am not against all machines, mostly those that came about since 1900. The invention of the PC has only created more work and not to the benefit of the economy.

Oh No! I don't use a "Pope" at all ("blasphemy"), not since I could use a genuine chambering. I'm one of those who still prefers butter to margarine & real coke to the diet stuff. If I'm using a rifle for deer I want a proper rifle.

FINALLY! A cogent argument!
