Retired Member of Parliament
BASC Member for 2 years
Martyn says:
As a Chairman of a Parliamentary Select Committee and Member of the Speaker’s Panel of Chairmen in my 23 years as a Member of Parliament, I believe I would bring a wealth of experience of committee work to obtain the best and quickest consensual results. My contacts in Parliament, and wider government, would help inform BASC of attitudes and issues towards firearms which would need consideration by shooting organisations. This will be especially mportant this year in the run-up to the an election when shooters have the chance to put our case to politicians when they are at their most receptive.
I have been vice chairman of the British Shooting Sports Council for a number of years. I have worked with BSSC and its individual organisations such as the NRA, NSRA, CPSA and of course BASC for many years. I am also a life member of the NRA. I have been involved in most forms of shooting since I first went rough shooting with my uncle over 50 years ago. I am mainly a target and clay pigeon shooter now but have enjoyed game shooting.
Having seen our sport being eroded by the antis over the years, and now that I am retired, I would like to use the expertise I have in achieving political and public relations results to help BASC in its sterling efforts to stem and reverse the tide against all the various aspects of our sport. An attack on one is an attack on all.
I worked in industry for 19 years before becoming a Member of Parliament. Prior to that I was a county councillor. I have had a great deal of involvement both in community and various voluntary organisations. For example, I am president of the Friends of the Llangollen Eisteddfod and vice president of several male voice choirs.
As one of the handful of MPs who refused to vote for the firearms restrictions following both the Hungerford and Dunblane tragedies, I know very well indeed the huge pressures there are to ‘do something’ engendered by the press and the media, encouraged by the antis, and I believe BASC has been one of the most effective engines against damaging and unnecessary legislation. I would like the opportunity to help BASC, working with BSSC and other responsible organisations, to be even more effective in the future, as we need to be as strong, vigilant, and together as possible in order to protect our sports and keep shooting!
interestingly no mention of party etc, I completely agree with Mr Gains comment and really if we can't move forward as one were not going to well move forwards! We need numbers to carry votes and if we're all fragmented and only look out for our own relatively small interests were done for.
