After the success of the 1st edition and subsequent reprint, I've updated the book to keep it current; it's due out March 2026.
Changes include:
Updated legislation re deer seasons and bullet weights in Scotland
Updated and simplified chapter 8, Registering as a food business
A discussion of thermal and digital scopes and how they relate to stalking & night culling
Dogs and deer stalking
The popular inspection and disease section has been expanded, with a member on here supplying an image I’ve used for liver White Spot Disease (thank you @tikkathreebarrels!).

All of these changes bring the book up to speed, there's (hopefully) no outdated information!

For those not familiar with the original book, there are no descriptions of misty hills or sun dappled coppices. It’s a thoroughly practical book, with much discussion of events after the shot to the larder.
I’ve been very honest about the whole stalking experience, such that I believe the novice would come away from reading the 160 pages and have a well rounded, realistic view of deer stalking from start to finish in the UK.

There are some kind comments after the post of the original book here, if you are fairly new to SD and wanted opinions from other stalkers on this forum about the utility of the book.

It can be pre ordered via Crowood press Complete Deer Stalker | The Crowood Press

The original edition was an excellent resource and more than covers everything you would need for DSC1 - I can only assume it has got better and is a very worthwhile purchase

I'm not just guessing, I have a pretty complete library of the resources available - for my DSC1 I got the BDS course book online, the Donnington Deer Management DSC1 course book by David Stretton (well regarded and i think David had a hand in putting the original DSC course together) and a hard copy of the Basc book from someone on here

there is nothing of any use for DSC1 not covered within this book in clear and concise manner
the inspection chapters particularly are excellent and much better than any others i have seen
but more than that it is not just a dry textbook but a readable resource of useful info

I’d go so far as to describe this book as required reading.

My (first) edition is still regularly consulted; if it’s been improved, I’d be tempted to say:

So it’s arrived!
Available only here for now:
I believe it’s fully up to date and a great all round addition for the new stalker, as well as a reference for the more experienced hunter with a number of additions to the Inspection and disease chapter, updated seasons and a simplified legislation chapter for those processing venison for sale.
I will have some copies I can send direct next week. I don’t get much of a discount from the supplier and once I factor in shipping it’s the same price as from the publisher, but I’ll happily send a copy if that’s the way you want to go!

🤬 Tried and failed to make payment using 3 different cards over 2 days on my iPad for this book using their payment system - it shouldn’t be that difficult! Anyone else encountered issues?

Thank you all for ordering, I appreciate you taking the time.
Do please post on here if you like/dislike or find it helpful or not after you've had a read.

@weblyish, thank you for your kind review, above, of the first edition🙏
More reviews of that edition here, if you scroll through the pages.
