The Hornet typically requires a different action than a Rem 700 SA. The case is too short, and rimmed, for a 700. Hence the Browning micromedallion, CZ527 and Anschutz Fox (IIRC). None of which are made today. As to the 17 FB, it can be run on a 700, but needs a specific bolt, so that it ejects correctly (and not prematurely). They index the ejector at a different position on the bolt face for this.

17 hornet savage m25 thumbhole stock, wildcat whisper sound mod. Virtually as quite as my hmr but can reload for it and far more effective to shoot. Went that way as could reload for it as was getting fed up with hmr split cases.
fortunately was able to stock up with powder and primers before the current supply issues and use the cheap krank value bullets for the rabbits.
Have you used the krank value bullets on fox or crows at all?

crows yes, fox no I use the heavier 25gn bullet, or take my .223, I am sure the 17gn would do the job if at a sensible distance, but I alway carry a few 25gn rounds just incase.
The Krank bullets are excellent, believe they came via Eley when they discontinued manufacturing the .17 mach2 ammo.

Ive got a 17 rem on a Sako S491 action, love it to bits, whatever you decide check you can get the components.

When did the stop making 17 Mach2 ammo?
Thanks, Ken.

I thought CCI made Hornady 17 rimfire products??
Ach!!! You're right, it was CCI who made the ammo (Hornady just provided the bullets). I should know, I still have a round of prototype HMR ammo with the CCI headstamp (Lot "A" was purely for industry testing, not sale, and had the vestigial CCI headstamp on the cases). All following lots had the Hornady headstamp. Though as I understand it, Winchester now makes all their rimfire in house (used to be CCI as well IIRC). Kind of like Aguila used to make PMC rimfire ammo (with the PMC headstamp), and some CMP orders. Just like SK made Wolf Target Match ammo back in the day (not sure who makes it today).

I have a bit of a .17 calibre itch. I've had HMR, Ackley Hornet, Hornady Hornet, Fireball and a Remington. Out of all of them I'd probably favour the Fireball. It's got plenty of grunt but uses much less powder than a Rem which helps a bit with barrel fouling. The brass is nicer than the Hornet offerings, that's quite thin and fiddly. It moderates well with my Wildcat Evo.

For foxing I'd stick with 25gr bullets. The Kranks bullets are good for rabbits and crows but they expand too fast for foxes from the HMR, lord knows how they'd react from a Hornet let alone a Fireball or Rem. I wouldn't be surprised if a Rem could blow them up in flight to be honest!

I'd say shooting vermin and birds at extended ranges is where the .17's shine. Even with heavy bullets it wouldn't be my first choice for foxing. It works to a degree, but I prefer to demolish pest species and generally use .22-250 as a minimum. I'm running a .25-06 at the moment!

In three years and hundreds of foxes I don't recall losing a single fox using a 17 Remington and 25gn bullets from Hornady shot from a bdl across ranges upto and exceeding 300 yards.

I'm not sure they ever did. I thought Hornady just made it with their (Eley's) head stamp and a different color polymer nose in a VMax bullet.
Hi,
My question was aimed (Pun?) at Liveonce.
So, does anyone still make 17 Mach 2 ammo?
Thanks, Ken.
Ps. I thought they did.

My understanding was that given the mach2 is a necked down .22 stinger length case, Eley made their own mach2 ammo, makes sense if you think about it they make millions of .22 cases, had the powder so only need to buy in the bullets. The mach2 had a short life due to the arrival of the hmr which won the day.

How would the u.k. end up with theses cheap .17 bullets otherwise? as would either be used by the .17 ammo manufacturer in the usa or sold as bullets in the usa and why as post #31 would it then be necessary to send them to America?

As for mach2 ammo still being made I believe cci do a production run occasionally, may be do a search or look round

I've been shooting a 17 fireball for a few years now I picked it up second hand on here and it's performed flawlessly just in the process of sourcing a new barrel not to bad considering I've put approximately 2500 down the barrel it's still doing one hole groups with a cold barrel at the moment!
