.17 hmr problems

£13.50 a box. Crikey, my local is £21 a box. Like you say, cracking high volume night time round for rabbits. At the price of HMR, it is all I use mine for now but for that purpose, it is peerless.
Last time I looked it was 24 quid a box for federal and they didn't have any 17g vmax in. Love the rifle, hate the ammo with a passion. Had a load of remmys sit in a box unfired because half had split necks before firing so not taking the risk

Ouch!!! That is insane price for rimfire. Nearly 50 pence means I couldn't miss much. Only get a quid a bunny.

It's cheaper for me to reload for the 223 than buy hmr ammo... Don't know anyone that stocks other brands like cci either, it's all hornady when it's in or federal!

Have you checked around lately as HMR ammo prices plummeted back to normal cost, as it went silly with the surge during a price rise the last year and a half.. Winchester are the cheapest , I was paying £11.50 for 50 a about a year ago, Hornady were not much more a mentioned....

I have a load of .223 heads here that I bought at bargain prices so I can reload a round for about 25p ... but its still less hassle and time just grabbing the HMR for small vermin in big numbers..

Has any other member had issues with a partial discharge in this calibre causing damage to your gun or injury.

Partial discharge yes but not damage or injury and this was at least five years ago now, probably more.

There certainly were problems with the manufacturing process of the ammo, the cases were too thin at the neck and could not be annealed due to the manufacturing process of a rimfire case. I know Winchester and for a fact that Hornady have changed their cases and since have never had a problem. I use Hornady 20g mostly and 17g.

You can easily find many examples of recalls of all sorts of ammo (.22RF included) and rifles over the years and unfortunately the 17HMR has been one of them however I wouldn't damn the calibre or rifles especially now the problem appears to be resolved with the newer ammo.

The reputation of .17HMR has been destroyed over the past few years. I reckon it'll be a decade or more before people start to trust it again.

I've had my CZ455 for about 2 years now feed it nothing but CCI, tried the rest but CCI grouped best...still have some of the Hornady & Remington ammo in the cabinet. Never had an issue. A few split necks after firing but never a hang fire or squib.

I've had mine for over a year now. It's fired somewhere between 500 and a 1000 rounds. Never had an issue with 17 vmax. I use it in the dark or daytime quite happily. It's been totally reliable.
As with any gun if it doesn't sound right. You would check before reloading surely?
Most of my firing issues have been with shotgun shells not going when struck. Also had one make a puff of smoke and all the shot dribbled out the end. I got some strange looks on the clay shoot that day.

Hmr is noisy but I love shooting it. Cracking gun for the job I use it for.

I used to have one when they first came out, they were a cracking 0-200 yard carrion crow plinker but I had the same issue as above so I scrapped it as there was going to be a injury!! I bought myself a 17 hornet for the same job and I must admit I love it but it’s costly to run but great

Why don't you reload? You can buy 17 gr bullets for about £5/100 and at 7-10ish grains powder with the primer you'll be loading accurate hornet ammo for similar or less than HMR.

A mate of mine phoned me up to say he'd had the the mag blow out of his 17, he's not on the forums so was unaware of the issue, ditched my HMR a long time ago after a bullet lodging in the barrel and several hang fires with various batches of ammo. I load hornet for HMR money and it is so much more gun!!

I will once I use up the 1000 rnds that I bought with the rifle at the time I didn’t reload at all but now I’m just reloading for every rifle once I’ve used up my stock of factory rounds

1000 factory rounds, ouch!! At least you've got a good stock of brass though!

ici had duff .17hmr ammo check ALL CASES (fired ) for splits if you find any isolate batch; the distributors have been aware of the issue for ages; Winchester cases seem to have thicker walls .
