.17HMR sound

I applied for and received a slot on my FAC to purchase a .17HMR however I'm now having doubts due to the noise levels. Unfortunately non of the RFDs near me are able to shoot the gun so I can hear it so I wondered if any forum members near Crediton in Devon would be open to me visiting them to hear one in action

Depends upon the context. I have sensitive ears, after a night on the rabbits with my moderated .17 HMR my tinnitus gets bad. I wear ear defenders to zero. However after 100 yards or so you would struggle to make out the super sonic crack of the tiny shot so it won’t particularly disturb neighbouring properties for taking out a few rabbits around a paddock. However I wouldn’t use it in my garden because of the proximity of neighbours. I wouldn’t use say it is closer to a .223 Rem than to .22LR.

Think you have the right idea to hear one in action. Stand close and far away to get a good idea.

i wasn't expecting one to be as loud as they are, mine even with a moderator is loud in my opinion.

i shoot my 22LR and its silent compared to it, for this reason i find myself using the 22 instead.

Yes they are loud, but what round above 1050fps isn't, you buy into it and quieten it down to your own acceptable level.
Personally I've shot a multitude of rabbits sitting out feeding without any of those in the group running off because of the sound of the incoming round, but a colleague sitting ten yards to my right would comment how loud it was.
It's the perfect round for the job required of it, and the accuracy and range is second to none in its size.
As for a moderator I'm using a Wildcat Evo.

Hmmm.
All relative methinks. If you are used to a moderated .22lr with subsonics even a high powered air rifle may sound loud! In the open field and with a decent moderator the .17 hmr will not be too noisy, at least for something that whizzes along at north of 2,500 fps i.e. more than twice the speed of the little subsonic .22 lr.
As above if zeroing I wear muffs but in the field nada.

It also depends on the moderator you use, DPT make a centrefire .17 calibre moderator which I've heard makes a big difference compared to the rimfire version.

Why the doubts mate? Is this proximity to houses thats the concern or the worry that the rabbits etc might object?

Pop down to Ladds, they will let you shoot one out the back of the cartridge store. have tested most of my rifles i have got from them behind the shed.
I love the speed of the clay trap for shotguns...super slow so everyone can break them  👍 To be fair its a nice set up there and plenty of guns.

There is a bit of a noise to a 22lr HV round and everything else over that mark , to the point now IF you want quiet get a .22LR they kill well and you can use subsonic rounds . stick to 40 grain pills for everything . 22hv are fine to 70 yards without faff and to be fair that's all we need and they are the most potent for fox etc
if you want more get a 22 hornet CF it will still moderate well and a good shooter can get out to say 200 I have done much more on easy days with a light breeze in my face . Hand loading this CF is a doddle and works out cheaper if you hand load it

I’m always conscious of the sound of my hmr, being near to other houses, but I think with a decent moderator it’s hard to pin point where the noise is coming from .

Most neighbours say, if they heard it, they thought it was an air rifle. They are 200m off.

For my ears I'd say mine sounded much like a 410 or 20g shotgun without the mod but once mod is on its really just the sonic sound of the round that I hear. Though sound is always different when stood behind shouldering a gun. For ref. The mod is a wildcat panther.
