1st centrefire (243)

If you can get to Credition, Ladd's Guns looks like it has a new .243 Mauser M12 in stock at a daft price.

The M12 is a solid rifle and will stabilise 80 grain copper for deer and shoot vmax for foxing with monotonous regularity.

The M12 is a great workhorse.

If you want a good .243 on a budget I would look at Howa, CZ, Bergara, Remington (700) and if you can find one a little used Parker Hale.

If money is really tight get the rifle and scope first, if you are new to centre fire you will need to get some range time in to get used to the rifle and to experiment with a variety of factory loads to find one your rifle likes. While you are doing this save for the mod and add it later.

Cheers, money is tight (just listed a shotgun to offset the cost :(and looking at all options.)
Scope isn't a problem as I have a few that will do the job for the time being, but mod is a given due to the land.
Limited CF experience, but completed DSC1 with a BDS rifle . 3 zeroing shots at 100 just outside 1moa and roe target all within 2 MOA. Will just need a bit of range time to find right ammo

Never one to shun an offer / suggestion, not a lot on your website so feel free to DM me with offerings around the £500 mark.. rifle, mod and bases /rings for 25mm scope (can sort scope from what I have) no need for bipod unless it's thrown in anyway.
Cheers, TD66

Add one of these to the list good robust guns for little money

Really just get Ed at Edinburgh rifles to sort you out.image.webp

If it’s your first rifle take your time and buy something that you can handle, feel and inspect. If you can shoot a number of rifles - take guided days using an estate rifle - before parting with cash.

Jump on an aeroplane (you can get flights for not a lot these days), or get in the car and get up to Edinburgh @Edinburgh Rifles - and if you get it right join them for one of their range days.

Agreed. Been looking at flights to Edinburgh and can do there and back for about the cost of an RFD transfer.
Like cash, time is limited though with family commitments.
The feeling and looking at is key for me, the chance to shoot is a bonus. I know under preasure I can shoot fairly well, just need a rifle that will be better than me (hope that didn't sound big headed!?)

Sam at Rakers (West Sussex) had a Parker Hale 243 "sleeper" . I have handled it and it is immaculate . He sold it new to a client with a box of 20 and bought it back, only 10 rounds had been used. It was a few years ago but if you give him a call I bet it is still in the back store.

My suggestion to the OP as well. This is where I picked up my bsa 270 for less than a couple of boxes of cartridges for it. Not a sleeper but a good workhorse. They seem to have plenty of rifles people have handed in to make space on their ticket, and move them on at honest prices. There would be lots of examples to handle there in the gun warehouse.

Did Plod limit you to .243?
Nope. Just what I requested.
Can't afford creedmoor prices, 243 will do the job, cheapish off the shelf ammo readily available. Could have loked at .308 but had to put a calibre. Will cross the copper bridge when we come to it.

Pity not to have chosen .308, I would say!
