.22 Hornet

sako tikka and CZ pass them over, plenty of other makes out there, Anschutz and weihrauch are probably the best out there, Ruger do a single shot I believe also, i ordered one by weihrauch last year had to wait 8 weeks but it’s worth it, faultless piece of kit

Hello

There are the CZ 527 in 22 Hornet.

Other very good ones are the Walther KKJ.

Greetings.

The safety is a complete pain in the **** . What the lever needs is re-profiling so one can gain a better and easier purchase on it with just the thumb and without need to lay rifle to one side to get ‘under’ the lever when in the safe position.

Hello. In all honesty, it's not something that bothers me.

I accept that it could be improved

I have three 17-series Anschutz rifles, a 17/10 .22 a 17/17 17HMR and a 17/30 Hornet. All have the famous (notorious) flag safety
The first two have never given a moment's trouble but the Hornet's safety has gradually got harder and harder to operate and now it's almost impossible to move it. When the rifle is uncocked it's perfectly free.
Has anyone had a similar problem and did you manage to cure it? All three of these rifles are extremely accurate!

No

No, but I did break one when attempting to bend re-profile without using enough heat.

I should have asked this before, I've had the bolt apart but for the life of me can't see how the safety actually operates. Also. is there anyone who could actually rectify this problem?

Any competent Gunsmith should be able to rectify if the fully consider this requirement:

Replace the safely with the signal pin and spring and make sure that the safety wing lines up with the firing pin lug and that the signal pin is properly seated.

I know this isn’t a deer cartridge, but what are peoples thoughts on them. I’ve found a nice old rifle with this chambering and I’m quite tempted for a bit of vermin control around the farm instead of a .17hmr. Ignoring practicalities, what do people think?
It can actually be really good good small deer cartridge with good shot placement. Great wild goat cartridge.

Never had a problem with mine always worked fine, had it a while as well, it is different to say the least
but if it works it works, if it ain’t broke I don’t try and mend it personally if it was made for it, it will work safely

22 hornet is OK, but rather shoot the 17 hmr . Hornet not flat enough for me
A typical 22 hornet with 45 grain bullets will have an MV of around 2800fps
A 17 HMR with 17g VMax has an MV of around 2500 fps
As well as having more MV, the hornet bullets have a higher BC
In my book that makes the hornet a flatter shooting round than the 17HMR
And that's also what I've found in practice

Cheers

Bruce

As a little update to my original post, today I became the proud owner of this little .22 hornet. Very much a heart purchase. Logical thought didn’t really enter into the equation. It’s a Ziegenhen and Sohn bolt action, I’m guessing made in the 30’s. Interestingly it’s been re-proofed in Birmingham at some point in its life.

That looks interesting, is it stamped with a german calibre equivalent for the hornet :)
It is. It’s stamped 5.6x35. What’s also interesting is that the crown is stamped Parker rifled. Which was the reason I was happy to buy it as reading into the 5.6x35 it seems there are several slight dimensional differences between that and the hornet.

Ah the .22 Hornet.

Did I mention that I have one?

W.W. Greener (1902) Martini action (sleeved) wearing a Weaver K3-1 scope.

She is beautiful.

She reminds me of a girl from Medical School.

Margo.

Margo was also beautiful.

Margo was also hard to handle, and as mad as a box of frogs - time spent in her company was expensive, traumatising and sometimes dangerous.

Yes, this rifle reminds me of Margo...

Beautiful to look at, but one of the most frustrating rifles I have ever known to get 'on point'.

She is only a cabinet Queen, and should be kept locked up (frankly so should Margo) - but I did eventually settle on a load which seemed to suit her. I knocked up fifty rounds yesterday.

Thankfully, I never knocked up...leave it S62, just leave it.

Margo, if you are reading this: I died in 2012 so it's no good trying to find me...🤫

Possibly the best response ever.

I struggle to see how anyone walking about in the middle of the night shooting foxes or rabbits over farmland would ever be "caught out" if they carry on shooting lead, of course I wouldn't ever take anything shot with lead to a game dealer if everything goes belly up. But I will be super careful. Fingers crossed it will be some years off... maybe even get kicked into the long grass... stranger things have happened.
When you’ve stated your future intention in writing (Like you have) they might just drag you in, sit you down and shine a 40 watt bulb (If they’re not also banned) on you while questioning you! ;)
Ken.

You're probably correct Ken, what a plonker I've been  .
And "They" seem to have the time & inclination to do such things if the clip I watched about Greater Manchester police confiscating the shotguns from a couple of pigeon shooters carrying out their crop protection on a farmer's land

Everyone knows you said it tongue in cheek.
