The safety is a complete pain in the **** . What the lever needs is re-profiling so one can gain a better and easier purchase on it with just the thumb and without need to lay rifle to one side to get ‘under’ the lever when in the safe position.

I have three 17-series Anschutz rifles, a 17/10 .22 a 17/17 17HMR and a 17/30 Hornet. All have the famous (notorious) flag safety
The first two have never given a moment's trouble but the Hornet's safety has gradually got harder and harder to operate and now it's almost impossible to move it. When the rifle is uncocked it's perfectly free.
Has anyone had a similar problem and did you manage to cure it? All three of these rifles are extremely accurate!

I should have asked this before, I've had the bolt apart but for the life of me can't see how the safety actually operates. Also. is there anyone who could actually rectify this problem?
Any competent Gunsmith should be able to rectify if the fully consider this requirement:
Replace the safely with the signal pin and spring and make sure that the safety wing lines up with the firing pin lug and that the signal pin is properly seated.

It can actually be really good good small deer cartridge with good shot placement. Great wild goat cartridge.

22 hornet is OK, but rather shoot the 17 hmr . Hornet not flat enough for me
It really depends what you want to do. If you are stricky shooting varmint then the hmr will do the trick if you are shooting varmint in say fallow country and you happen upon one then the 22 hornet has you covered.
A typical 22 hornet with 45 grain bullets will have an MV of around 2800fps
A 17 HMR with 17g VMax has an MV of around 2500 fps
As well as having more MV, the hornet bullets have a higher BC
In my book that makes the hornet a flatter shooting round than the 17HMR
And that's also what I've found in practice

As a little update to my original post, today I became the proud owner of this little .22 hornet. Very much a heart purchase. Logical thought didn’t really enter into the equation. It’s a Ziegenhen and Sohn bolt action, I’m guessing made in the 30’s. Interestingly it’s been re-proofed in Birmingham at some point in its life.

That looks interesting, is it stamped with a german calibre equivalent for the hornet 
It is. It’s stamped 5.6x35. What’s also interesting is that the crown is stamped Parker rifled. Which was the reason I was happy to buy it as reading into the 5.6x35 it seems there are several slight dimensional differences between that and the hornet.That looks interesting, is it stamped with a german calibre equivalent for the hornet

She is beautiful.
She reminds me of a girl from Medical School.

Margo was also hard to handle, and as mad as a box of frogs - time spent in her company was expensive, traumatising and sometimes dangerous.
Yes, this rifle reminds me of Margo...
Beautiful to look at, but one of the most frustrating rifles I have ever known to get 'on point'.
She is only a cabinet Queen, and should be kept locked up (frankly so should Margo) - but I did eventually settle on a load which seemed to suit her. I knocked up fifty rounds yesterday.
Thankfully, I never knocked up...leave it S62, just leave it.
