.22 WMR – Ammunition suggestions - Brno 611

Hi Guys,

This topic has probably being discussed on numerous occasions however…. I own a Brno 611 semi auto .22WMR and want to use it for vermin etc. and the occasional fox at sensible ranges.
I haven’t shot rim fire in years but have an interest in returning to it in the coming months. What is the go to .22 WMR round at present for this type of shooting?


Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Like yourself I also have a BRNO 611 ('95). Congratulations on owning one of the best built semi autos ever produced. Protect your magazine with your life, they are literally impossible to find. Our American friends pay huge sums for any that become available. Regards the ammo I have tried most brands through mine. At one stage I "settled for" CCI Maxi Mag 40gr and accuracy was acceptable albeit a dirty round. More time was spent cleaning the action than I would have liked as a result. I cautiously switched to Hornady Vmax 30gr concerned it may be too light. In my rifle it was a game changer. 0.5" groups at 50m and around 1" at 100m. Zeroed at 75m I have point and shoot on rabbits to 120m. Foxes under 100m are no issue either. The other bonus with the Hornady is it's a noticeably cleaner round and the action only occasionally requires a blow out with the air line and a dry lube.

Just one last questions are you head shooting the foxes or is there enough energy under 100 yards to chest shoot them with the Hornady V max ammunition?

€50 for a spare mag was a steal, brilliant. I got lucky myself a few years back and found a source who had new old stock aftermarket mags, which function flawlessly. I'm not one for head shots on a fox with the wmr to be honest. A well placed shot in the boiler room will always put them down.

I use the Remington 33 grain Accu-Tip-V, and it is as accurate as far as my torch, which is about 100m.
Terminal effect is ideal: absolutely no need for head shots.
My only caveat is that it is quite dirty ammo: almost always some powder residue, including in/around the moderator. But this does not appear to have any effect on the grouping.
Its a lovely round for lamping foxes.

Avoid head shots. Side on shots and low neck work perfectly. Frontal bib shots work well too.
