.223 varmint recommendations

Better.

I've had three. The first two were a .204 Ruger and a 1:8" .223, bought in Aus for fox, dog and roo control. Absolute lasers. When we left to return to New Zealand the station manager insisted on buying them as he would always pick one up in favour of his own rifle. So I sold them for more than I paid for them, and a month or so later bought another in .223.

I can bore you for hours with stories of remarkable deeds with the Tikka SuperVarmint, there's a few videos of it in action on here. Suffice to say that at this time of year it is used every second day for hares, rabbits and goats and occasionally small deer, anything under ~300m is an easy shot assuming the wind is behaving. In fact if you point it at anything closer than 150m, you feel guilty.

Obviously we all have our favourites and there's nothing wrong with any of the other brands mentioned. But there's something about the Tikka that puts it head and shoulders above the rest in its price class. I put it down to the excellent fitting stock, silky smooth action and the utterly unfussy barrel which will shoot anything into tiny little holes. It seems oblivious to nodes or ladders or any of the reloading principles. Mine is a 1:12" and shoots any bullet between 40-55gr pretty much perfectly, regardless of velocity.

The SuperVarmint is regarded as something of a premium rifle here, and pricing reflects that.

Of the rifles mentioned in the original post, the Tikka and CZ 527 are obviously the best. I’d rate the Tikka and CZ as equal quality though I imagine many would rate Tikka as better. IMO the Howa 1500 is head and shoulders above a Remington 783. Barrel twist rate would of paramount importance to me. I wouldn’t buy anything slower than 1:9 and 1:7 or 1:8 would be better.

I abhor tiny ejection/loading ports which the 783, RAR and Axis have. T3 ports used to be as small but are larger on the T3x, but are still too small for my taste. I also don’t care for DBM’s, I prefer a blind magazine or hinged floorplate. This has nothing to do with quality, Tikka is excellent quality, but personal taste on my part.
I have two CZ’s and we have four Weatherby Vanguards(Howa 1500 action) in the family. I’ve been happy with them.

Thanks ever so much for that.

Have to agree about the ejection ports. Every time I get out the Tikka T3s it frustrates me, after using the Howas. Particularly when trying to quietly remove a round from the breech with your fingers instead of having it go flying off into the long grass. So yeah, the T3x is a massive improvement in this regard.

For varmint rifles, IMO the detachable magazine is far preferable to an internal mag / hinged floorplate. Personal taste as you say. This is probably only relevant for shooting multiple critters like rabbits from one pozzie. I have two 10 shot magazines and will motor through the contents of those when the bunnies are thick. When in position and comfortable and in the zone, I'd hate to have to keep reloading internal mags.

For one off foxes and the like I guess it doesn't really apply.

When it comes to magazines aesthetics as well as function are important to me. I do not like non-flush, protruding mags. The double-stacked, flush-fitting, steel mag on my 85 XS action holds 6 rounds. I have two. And if needed I can borrow a third one from my .223 Sporter. No big fan of floor plates either. Have one on my AI .222. But it holds 6 rounds and is OK when out for an after-dinner fox walk around the paddocks. No real need to have more ammo in your pocket.

Cheers

What about Remington 700 SPS Varmint? Anyone had experience with these rifles?I'm a lefty and they do this rifle as a LH option.
I'm not a fan of the SPS stock, but I had a VSSF in .223. One of the most accurate rifles I've shot. If you can find one get it and treat yourself to a trigger upgrade.

Apologies to the OP for butting in, but I am also thinking about a .223 for foxes, crows etc.

The CZ 527 & Tikka are already on my short list & there are plenty comments in earlier posts.

Another rifle which caught my eye whilst browsing was a Savage Model 16 UK Accustalker with a 20" heavy stainless barrel. The rifle is 3D bedded with Savage's Accutrigger, which apparently improve accuracy.

Does anyone have any experience/knowledge regarding the Savage?

Thanks in advance.

Seeing as how you're already convincing yourself to "stretch to a Tikka" @awsteed, you might as well stop pondering now and just get a Supervarmint. It's impossible to regret buying one. Impossible.

+1 for that I have two of these one in .243 the other in .223 absolutely fantastic rifles
