.22LR barrel cleaning

I know, most of us don’t clean .22LR barrels. But have any of you tried cleaning in the same way a centrefire is cleaned?

I know most will clean and then foul the barrel but do you see a major difference?

My T1X recently seems to have lost a little accuracy when in cold conditions, I’m wondering if a good scrub may be in order…

It really depends on your expectation regards accuracy and the rifle itself.
If you are looking to squeeze every last little bit of accuracy out of your rifle, then it will almost certainly benefit from a cleaning regime, more so the chamber than the barrel itself. I shoot Rimfire Benchrest and tiny margins can often decide results so accuracy and cleaning go hand in hand and do make a difference. It’s a question of whether that difference is important to your application.
If you want to see a practical demonstration of how it’s done, have a look at this

First few shots may be slow from the build up of wax you get. Atleast untill its warms up.

Prs lot seem to be keen on keeping the barrel warm with caps to keep the heat In

Quite a good article here from a well respected competitor that works for Vudoo.

It will be done with CCI for the first 30!! 😂
My tikka actually shoots the CCI standard velocity very well.
5 shot groups under a half inch at 50 yards consistently.
It's the cheapest ammo I can get and I use it on gongs out to 200 yards and it performs well.

Unfortunately mine isn’t as partial to it - it shoots ok, 10 shot groups around an inch at 50 yards, but it shoots SK LR match very well. Just unfortunate it’s more expensive!

On a wet winters day last year, I decided to strip and clean my T1X 22.
Forest foam for an hour then patched it through, it took another steeping of forest foam to get patches clean.
It was all over the place for twenty or so rounds then tightened right up to better than before, a mix of CCI, Winchester and RWS all shooting acceptable groups for pest control.

Have you ever had feeding issues with the SK ?
Its also very accurate in mine but if I put more than 5 or 6 rounds in the mag I sometimes get a bullet that will point straight up when pushing the bolt forward.

No, not at all, however, my friend has a CZ LRP and they are known to have issues with some ammunition - he tried CCi standard target and it would not feed well at all, likely due to the CZ having a tight chamber.

I also like that the SK LR match are quite a clean round…no waxy residue.

Whilst this may sound all wrong I sometimes squirt a solvent based light oil like WD-40 down a 22 barrel then shoot it out the NEXT day. The cold weather could be impacting on the bullet lube and coated barrel of said lube.
Any build up of lead may therefore be picking up more lead etc. When the temp increases the build up probably gets blasted out better.
Just a thought....

My CZs do a lot of work

I typically get through 3000 rds per month

I’ve recently added a couple of match grade rifles with chambers cut to match specific ammo

Though my Cz 452 rarely sees a clean (just once a year)

The Lilja barrels (and bolt face) of the precision rifles require more regular attention or I get problems with extraction

Two things to think about, my P94S Range always throws the first shot low from a cold barrel which I’m sure is a consequence of the solidified wax in the barrel from previous use. Next shot is pretty much bang on then everything else is same hole (if I do my bit 😳). If the ambient temp is low then the barrel will a) take longer to warm up & b) cool quicker when not being used.

The second thing is the moderator, I used one on the P94S initially but found the accuracy dropped off for no apparent reason. Until that was I removed the moderator & found that the powder fouling on the crown was obviously the root cause. Cleaned the crown & stopped using the moderator, never had an issue since.
