22lr semi auto vs bolt action.

Have and had lots of .22 auto's over the years. Semi autos are great fun but they are just not as accurate as a bolt. I think my most accurate sporter I have is a CZ I purchased about 40 years ago, it's still going very strong despite the newer shorter synthetic stocked versions I have today.
My favorite semi that I still have today is a Gevarm (French) that fires from an open bolt, I believe it's from the early 60's, not particularly accurate but it never fails to operate and is a fun shoot.

With todays technology (range finders, ballistic reticles etc.) shooting a reasonable .22lr out to 100 yards should be no trouble. Enjoy your work.

I have a .22LR BRNO Model 2 (bolt action) using subsonic hollow points for covert jobs, a .17HMR CZ 455 (bolt action) for head shooting normal 50-120yard rabbits, and a .22WMR Remington 597 (semi auto) for mooching with a smile on my face. If I only had one gun it would be the 455, and if only one calibre it would probably be .17HMR … although that is being eroded by poor ammunition.

A semi automatic gun requires stripping and cleaning frequently, a bit of patience and TLC.

The only .22LR I own is a Bremmer AR-15 carbine. With the original little x4 optic it is surprisingly accurate. With CCI standard ammo It can group in the 5 ring at 200yds at Bisley if the wind is mild. But the downside is that it is quite sensitive to ammo and finicky to get it to run reliably. Reliability with CCI standard ammo is not great as the ammo is somewhat underpowered for the design. So I tend to give up some accuracy for reliable cycling and use the higher powered Fiocchi Ultrasonics. No such problems with bolt actions so that is one factor in their favour.

Once a month I help on a new members training course at my local rifle club.
Some of the club rimfires semi and bolt have probably had 1000000 rounds through them.
The new members have to shoot 50 rounds 30 bolt and 20 semi, or the other way around. You can tell by the targets which is which.

You need a laserscope - if you are serious about hitting them around 100 yards, or 90 or 110..

Hmmm...was hitting targets at 320yds yesterday (.22LR). No laser scope....Applied Ballistics' CDM (custom drag model) for SK Long Range ammo was spot on for the come ups. Wind was the big influencer at that range. It was close to 2 full mils in yesterday's wind.

i have taken my rim-x out to 450m with sk long range match and frankly i was amazed !

fact is you can buy an accurate semi auto 22 rf - however expect to pay a considerably more money to get one that could compete with a £150 bolt gun off the dealers second hand rack !

Are you set on the 22lr?
hi guys sorry to bother you, i'm having to buy a new 22lr for work, its mainly for rabits and crows and other vermin out to about 100m and i've been debating on weather to get a semi auto or a bolt action, i've heard that the semi autos can be quite inaccurate but i think it would be handy for fast shooting, just wondered what your thoughts where?
thanks so much.
JP.

Accuracy - some semi autos are not
known for accuracy

I had one for target and ended up just for HD short range it was useless over 40 yds

I’d prefer to use my hmr for this but sadly the place I work dosent allow them.
Why is that ?? Owning both for many years, I know which one I would allow if it was my ground !! If you are controlling rabbits the 17hmr will reduce numbers far quicker. Maybe I just can't shoot as well as others on here but rabbits at 100yrds with a .22 rimfire, you lose a fair few if they are close to the holes or thick cover

im a keeper and my estate has banned 17hmr due to 2 tikka t1x's blowing up and sadly they decided to ban them but i like my hmr but i have since went for a in the middle rifle and i bought a browning t bolt 22lr and its going cracking but definetly not as deadly as the hmr over longer distances
