243 fazination???

can anyone explain to me how .243 could be deer legal for anything other that CWD and Munties in England and Wales when 6mm rifles are .236 and the minimum calibre is .240??? In NI where they have Red, Sika and Fallow the minimum calibre is .236 to allow .243 so does that mean that if you shoot large deer in England and Wales you are breaking the law, after all the law is the law surely?

Calibre in this case is the bore of rifle, ie the diameter from the bottom of the lands to the bottom of the lands. Many British rifles calibres are named from the distance from land to land. For example the 7mm, is .284 bore, but the 7x57 is called the .275 rigby, or the 6.5x54 Mannlicher has a .264 Bore (as in 264 win mag), but in the British empire was the .256 Mannlicher.
But law makers are a law unto themselves. eg in Scotland we have to use a minimum of 100gr bullet, so we are using 243s with 100 gr bullets, but from what I can see a 243 is more effective with a 95 or 90 grain bullet, and actually no deer would know the difference.

yeh but a 6mm bullet is still only .236 inches across! I think there's a bit of a challenge to any flo that tries to say all you need is a .243 when it's too small to be all deer legal!! When NI actually had the brainpower to put down the actual 6mm 'calibre' the point was made.

Most bullet manufacturers say 6 mm = .243 diameter .

then if they do they need corrected because 6mm bullets are .236 inches in diameter but I know they may put '.243 bullets' on the packaging which avoids confusion

I also like them to drop as quick as possible. Having the possibility to choose between a 30-06 and a 243 for heavier stags, boar, etc..... I'll take the 30-06 any day. But turning the 243 into a varmint cartridge is a bit to far the other direction. Any deer with a 80 grain TTSX out of a 243 in his vitals will be dead. This is not the goal neither. We want to kill them in a decent way. The 243 will do this on lighter deer.
I never was a 243 fan. Bought one, because a cheap one was available. A joy to shoot. A good game round if you know and accept it's limits.

Do bullets not traditionally fit into the grooves, rather than just between the lands?
The 6mm bullets I have are according to my micrometer 0.2435"
