.260, Overlooked?

I had a .260 rem over a creed , time line was just before the Covid hit us . I didn't and for deer / fox I still say the .260 rem is better for stalkers ! Why ? well firstly you wont be needing any longer bullets than the std length , secondly you can in times of poor supply you can neck up and down 308 right down to 243 etc ,etc .
Most my bullet choices are around what i hunt and i do not hunt paper and steel at 1000 yards ! If ever had the need / want to I hold confidence in the fact I can Place well against the majority . The only problem is .260rem is.......
cartriges is no longer off the shelf! but we shoot copper now in the field and i had the the 260 cut 1-7.5 twist from the get go for copper.

I have a .260 Remington and a 6.5 x 55mm.

The .260 is by Baldie Dave at Valkyrie, and is my preferred axe for long-range targets on my occasional visits to Bisley. With its favourite 139 gr. Lapua Scenars still supersonic at 1,200 yards it’s a 0.25 MOA rifle, even in my hands.

If you handload it’s a superb calibre.

lf you’re wealthy/untrained/nervous/idle/daft and shoot 6.5 Creedmoor factory ammo, you won’t want one.

Looks like the 6.5 Creedmoor owners will soon be exchanging pink frilly knickers for big boys pants…

“Federal's new high-pressure 6.5 Creedmoor +Peak ammunition boosts standard velocities by up to 300 fps. Using advanced alloy cases to safely handle 80,000 PSI, it outperforms 6.5 PRC”

That’s great - look forwards to seeing the images of blown receivers on the web from folk using such ammunition without having their weapons proven for such silliness

Had similar when Lapua introduced SRP brass in 308 with some FTR shooters pushing brass to the limits of single firing life just to get higher vo

i had a 260rem before they were popular but changed to the creed as soon as it arrived because coincidentally my 260 needed re-barrelling , i cannot quantify it but it seemed to me that an accurate load was found easier with the creed than the 260rem ? in my experience anyway ?

the very fact that superb factory is available nearly everywhere regardless of what people say IS a good thing and a massive advantage !

running AICS mags i was at a disadvantage with the 260rem as i could not seat the long slippery bullets out far enough a non problem with the creed

one other great thing about the creed is it triggers people , reason enough to own one (or two in my case)

there are those on here with a childish hatred of anything creedmoor (they are easy to spot) they put me in the mind of sufferers of TDS in so much as no matter the facts and regardless of the good things they will hate on the creedmoor at any opportunity - hilarious

as for being banned on military ranges , well this is stupid beyond compare , right up there with not being able to use 303 but can use 308 on the thetford RAF range ! Locally all 6.5mm rounds are banned regardless of the case on military ranges and whilst we all know that it's utterly ridiculous as does anyone with even a basic grasp of ballistics the military i'm sure will see the light on how stupid this all is but sadly change moves slower than a glacier with our military bureaucrats.

like ronin i am wary of the new super high pressure loads and personally think that they are a flash in the pan , i know the military are looking at it (277 sig fury) but has it been adopted yet? if adopted it may gain traction ?

Just an FYI, but 6.5CM can be made from .308 as well, it just requires a 7mm-08 trimmed 0.125" (off the bottom) to bump the shoulder back, and then neck turn the cases. A 6.5CM body die also helps, but is not necessary. Thin (Remington) .243 can also be used to form 6.5CM, with no neck turning (and they actually last longer due to their thicker case head).

I'll preface this with the fact that I'd have a 260 or 6.5x55 over a 6.5 Creed (though don't want any of them).

Realistically the Creed is by far the best option. I can't imagine anyone suggesting the two older cartridges for a new stalker when ammunition, data, components, and rifles are much better catered for in Creed, or at least no worse.
Those same reasons apply to old hands as well. As said, I'd not go Creed, I'd go for something interesting, but it wouldn't be a choice based in logic.
So no, 260 isn't overlooked as such, it just doesn't make heaps of sense for most.

FWIW, I'd go 6.5 RPM.

Of course we can but its a load more to do and more tooling to buy . I often Use 243 brass now as I have a one and all the Kit for making which takes a straight mandrel a one press on new brass . When i had my 7-08 in the 90s and then i had another 243 then . The least we do the longer it remains mallable

TBF I have always got Common cases that should be easy to get my hands on fast for my rifles , ideally with the correct caliber stamp but i am not paying out for that and waiting . But 260 if you find some are expensive and hard to find now
I really don't fancy a 6.5 creed , it is however very popular and now a brilliant choice for many but not me

If bowland says anything its probably wrong, he doesnt even understand basic rules of what can be shot when.

True Mungo, I know several hunters who use it for small deer, and there are effective loads for the job. But then again, is it then doing a job already done by other calibers? When I say one trick it is referring its long range accuracy, which it does very well. Bring on the .260 Rem.

It will have been cut with the same reamer as mine👍

I like the old 6.5x55 swede ...does the trick.
My 6.5-06 does it a bit faster.
I had a 6.5x284...faster again.
The 260 seems logical too and the Ackley...6.5CM...hornady sales pushing that and the ARC...

Take your pick...
