.300 Win Mag

I've got a 300wm barrel for my R93. Its got a Wildcat mod on it.
It doesnt kick so much as rotate in your hand when you shoot.
I've zeroed it and since then not done any target work with it, but I can honestly say that I've never noticed recoil when using it in the field.
Everything that I've shot with it has dropped on the spot.

Heh Heh!, rotation / torque .... now thats a sign of an eager bullet to exit the muzzle!!:D

Papers have been filled in and loaded on the courier, (Mrs Finnbear)

:D That made me smile! I am weighing up the possibilities of this and a few other calibers for boar and moose, so have been reading this thread with interest.

Thanks!

Ian

Where I live you can buy a .300 Win Mag while youre out to get groceries and laundry detergent. They always are for sale used. Guys buy them and realize its too much gun for whitetails.

Or is it that guys realise that they are too much gun for themselves? I reckon thats the truth more so...dead deer cant be any deader killed with a 300 than a 243!

Thats what I'm saying. Guys buy the mighty 300 Win and quickly get their teeth rattled at the range. Why kill your shoulder when a .243 will drop a whitetail deer in its tracks. They are one of the most common calibers up for consignment at the local gun shop.

I have used the 300 win mag for many years now both here and overseas. I think the rifle has more miles than Richard branson:D . The rifle is not overly heavy . ..about the same weight as a Remington sendero. No muzzle brake or moderator. The stock is correctly fitted to me and carries a quality ( ie pachmeyer decelerator recoil pad. The recoil is there but easily manageable from this set up and the because everything fits me well and the stock is well designed I have never failed to see the bullet impact in the scope.
choice of bullet makes a huge difference to terminal performance and I have shot 180 grain hornady interbonds ever since they were introduced at 3050 fps with devastating effect . very little carcass damage. Certainly less than from a lighter faster calibre, great knock down and extreme accuracy at the extended ranges the rifle is used at. If you were to shoot a lightweight set up in 300 win mag you are of course going to feel more recoil, one cannot fight the laws of physics. However use a rifle with appropriate weight, a good muzzle brake or moderator and the round is manageable and incredibly effective in the field. yours respectfully Mike Norris Brock and Norris Custom Rifles

Anybody here tried the remington ultra mag ? My local guy specialises in big rifles and has a ultra mag and a few win mags in . I've had a go with the win mag m it's not too bad , slightly more than the .308 . I've only heard the ultra mag . **** me that thing roars !

Had a Ruger 300wm , stainless , laminated with iron sights ,nice gun ,accurate, bought it for plains game in Africa ,kicked like a mule , more power than you need for anything in the UK ,ammo expensive .

Absolutely love .300 win mag.

Shot 7 different species in Africa last year up to Kudu size with this calibre, all one shot kills. Have also taken red, fallow and muntjac with it. Bullet size hole in and less than 50p piece exit hole on exit, with minimum meat damage and bruising. Even on the muntjac.

Down right bloody accurate calibre too. Currently use 165gr Nosler Accubonds. Have also used 165gr Sierra Gamekings to good effect.

Having a second .300 win mag built at the minute on a Mauser action for driven boar.

You know your shooting a 'proper' rifle with a .300 win mag! Doesn't take long to start getting addicted to the recoil, if your man enough to handle it!!

Right, I am seeking the views of those who have actually owned & shot this cal, I already have the guidance of seeing this in action on Reds,........ I would like any other expansions of views on this cal from the membership please,:thumb::popcorn:

dont bother , been there done it , sold it !!!!!!

bloody expencive to feed , buy a good 30-06 do the job just as well on the reds in my opinion . and believe me i shoot enough lowland reds to have an opinion .

but saying that i shoot all my reds at the moment with 270 and barnes 14gn tsx why complicate things

I shoot a 308 Norma which is very similar. I don't have any issues with it other than I can't make myself take it out for mule and whitetail deer. It's a lot of gun for deer.~Muir

If you want to use it abroad lee the 30-06 limits where you can take it. 300 wm isn't a military calibre and can be taken pretty well anywhere.

Somewhat ironic that, as the German Army use it as their sniper cartridge in the AI AWM. Still, since when have any firearms laws been consistent?

I just bought some geco 300 for £25/20
i thought that was pretty reasonable compared to the £60+/20 of Remington
ive got no idea how good the geco is but big cost saving if they work ok

cant see relaoding being any more expensive than a 270

75gr powder
1kg of powder = 200+ rounds £60-70
200x .30cal bullets £50-60
200 primers £8-10

so anywhere from £120 to 140 for 200 rounds
