.308 added to ticket, requested in anticipation of lead ban. Will keep the .243 and love the little .222.

Ticket also opened up 🎉, thanks to all who commented on my post some time ago giving advice as to best approach with FEO👍

So looking for inspiration re the new addition (don’t tell SWMBO 😂)

Mainly for woodland and hight seat work, knees too shot for the hill.

Current candidates (all used)
Sauer 101 GTI
Sako 85
S&L classic ( my .243 is an S&L )
Chapuis Rols

Irrespective of the above I would like to consider an adjustable stock and shortish barrel. But not keen on the look of many of the chassis type stocks, prefer to be a bit more traditional.

So whilst trying to keep an open mind, all suggestions / pointers welcome.

Have you considered the Anschutz 1782? Quality rifle, superb trigger etc

Short barrel and a nice rifle, not adjustable stock though and you didn't mention budget: For Sale: - Mauser MO3 .308

Something a bit different, not an adjustable stock though:
For Sale: - CZ 557 LUX

Choice of stocks, it does say the Kroseg is adjustable but I couldn't see the join on it for the cheek riser. 20" barrel and if you like Sako 75s...
For Sale: - Sako 75 Semi Custom Carbon .308

You could probably get Michael Rainback to make the comb adjustable on a more traditional wood stock, which makes the choice wider.

Don’t know why but didn't have Anschutz on the radar, always think of them as making excellent smaller calibers.

Thanks for the pointer, some of these look really interesting but maybe out of budget as new.

I've got a lovely little Anschutz .22 but don't try and get any spare parts for it. I am trying to get a sear but can only buy a complete trigger unit that costs more than the rifle is worth!

The ATA Turqua have some very good reviews and only cost £599. Adjustable stock, 20inch barrel in .308. Could save some money or spend more on a scope? 👍

Get @BE Precision or someone of that ilk to build you a rifle in the style of an RPA Woodland hunter using a Tikka T3 action in a GRS Sporter stock. The stock will take the wider barrel & he can inlet to take the CTR bottom metal & magazine. That’ll give you a nice short barrel, an adjustable wooden (laminate or chose a Berserk synthetic) stock, an accurate rifle that’s just at home woodland stalking as it is knocking over fallow at 250 yards from a highseat. Whack a decent variable on top like a 4-16 Swaro with a No4a reticle & you will have a VERY flexible set up.

Tikka T3 stainless dropped into a PSE e-lite stock, pic rail, alpex LRF on QD mounts for culling, schmidt polar on QD mounts for the hill, .308 sending 130g copper at 3000fps and you’ll have the only rifle you’ll ever need.

Sauer 100 xta to add to the mix ? The Mauser M03 for sale on here someone pointed out earlier does looks cracking value for money, if I wanted a .308 I’d jump on it.

Just a thought if it’s worth a trip to Ivythorn Sporting to handle the various options - it’s a very gentlemanly, no pressure experience.

Kind regards

Benelli Lupo with wood stock? A blend of old and new… I went used Sauer 202 for quality and additional barrels and remain delighted with the balance and short barrel.

This above. Great experience at Ivythorne and answers to all my daft questions. In .308 I decided that used quality was sensible given it seems to be almost impossible to shoot out a .308 barrel - Paul at Corinium rifle range tells of 68k shots through his .308 Blaser!

Still not totally insired🤷‍♂️

second hand Sako 85 maybe.

Are Sabatti rovers any good ?

ATA Turqua value but again any good ?

Why have I discounted Remington and Browning , loads of stock choices : I have no experience of them.

As the name suggests I like the 308 and have used for more than 20- years. I have had guests with 25-06 and 65/55 etc and while my deer were I the larder they were still walking the hills chasing wounded beasts.

SAKO - 75 or 85 stainless synthetic if you are going to use it in anger, or get a pretty one if you are going to polish it.

The end.

Why 308? Apart from ammo availability

Sako 85 - bloody love it. Light, super accurate, bombproof. 308 from the Finnish rifle gods. 3000 fps with mildish loads pushing 130gr TTSX. Will take anything in the UK & ROI and much beyond.
