.308 variation : inspire me !

Simpson Brothers Gun Shop at Wittering Grange Farm near Peterborough have a used Mauser M03 Extreme .308 in amazing condition (virtually as new) complete with Mauser QD mount and 34mm rings and alternate spare Mauser M03 picatinny rail. Handbook and original tools. Has a fluted barrel slightly used and a brand new shorter barrel unfired. Adjustable comb on stock. A now rare example - especially with a brand new spare barrel.

.308 added to ticket, requested in anticipation of lead ban. Will keep the .243 and love the little .222.

Ticket also opened up 🎉, thanks to all who commented on my post some time ago giving advice as to best approach with FEO👍

So looking for inspiration re the new addition (don’t tell SWMBO 😂)

Mainly for woodland and hight seat work, knees too shot for the hill.

Current candidates (all used)
Sauer 101 GTI
Sako 85
S&L classic ( my .243 is an S&L )
Chapuis Rols

Irrespective of the above I would like to consider an adjustable stock and shortish barrel. But not keen on the look of many of the chassis type stocks, prefer to be a bit more traditional.

So whilst trying to keep an open mind, all suggestions / pointers welcome.
To be honest any used tikka or sako would be fine I’ve an old sako m591 in 7 mm that’s been a tack driver and recently bought a tikka 595 in .308 from a good friend of mine most stalking rifles are very lightly used and the .308 is hardly a barrel burner

A bit left field, what about a Parker Hale, Mauser action, loads out there, fanatastic quality rifle for absolute peanuts, stocks are not adjustable, my .308 stock is not so I out a cheek pad/stock bag on it.

I was looking at one a while ago, it was so light, balance was great, barrel had not had lot through it, it looked like a Proctor, unfortuntely no space for it, on ticket or in the cabinet.

If you do go with a Sako 85 pre owned, just be careful of the ones with rubber coated stocks. In a few years they end up getting as sticky as an old boiled sweet !! Although with a bit of cleaning the rubber does come off.

I wouldn't touch any German rifle apart ASH Walkuere. Stainless T3 Lite 20" in a better stock will drop deer out to over 500m. Will cover driven hunts or longer ranges, African game up to Kudu easily. We did some 200yd precision tests comparing a 308 T3X Lite and a 308 CTR with factory ammo. No choices, just had Sako 308 168gr bthp. T3X was brand new, only zeroed. Average Results: T3X Lite 0.35MOA, 308 CTR 0.23 MOA

As the name suggests I like the 308 and have used for more than 20- years. I have had guests with 25-06 and 65/55 etc and while my deer were I the larder they were still walking the hills chasing wounded beasts.

SAKO - 75 or 85 stainless synthetic if you are going to use it in anger, or get a pretty one if you are going to polish it.

The end.
It’s a strange world we live in.

A friend had a professional set up in Argyll for over two decades.

Used to detest guests turning up with 308

“The effing dogs will be on overtime this week”

They were 270 and 243 men through and through.

Mostly sika /red and the hybrids.

Don’t even mention copper , he would throw half bricks at them before he would pay the money for copper:

I own 3 Tikkas in 3 different calibres, 243, 308 & 7mm

Look at the new Tikka Ace Game it’s excellent.

There was a lovely little original .308 thumbhole RPA woodland stalker with 16" barrel on gunrader 2 days ago but it's gone so can't send a link...

If I had to go down to one deer rifle, that would be it....

I like my Sauer 202 Hardwood so if you can find one I recommend getting it. It has an 18" barrel and handles well, but is also accurate out to long range.

This above. Great experience at Ivythorne and answers to all my daft questions. In .308 I decided that used quality was sensible given it seems to be almost impossible to shoot out a .308 barrel - Paul at Corinium rifle range tells of 68k shots through his .308 Blaser!
68K as in 68 000 shots? Sounds a bit suspect to me. I have read of 10 000 shot figure for 308win barrel life before though.

Ask him. I may have it wrong but I don’t think so. Corinium Range is always well booked.
Wouldn't surprise me at all. He said similar to me when I used to go there. That rifle is in use most days of the week on the range and they are fully booked most of the time.
