.45-70 for Deer (England)?

Anyone on here using .45-70 for deer in England? Any problems obtaining the variation?

I put in for a variation for the above, for woodland - close range deer stalking (as I don't really like using my 24" T3 with its 4" moderator in dense woodland).

However FEO isn't sure about it (none issued in Staffordshire apparently) and it'll be a FLM decision. He did ask for details of any persons who do have this calibre conditioned for deer, as it'll help my case but of course not guarantee it.

Please PM if you'd rather not disclose on a public forum.

Many thanks,

Chris

Chris; When I was Cheshire, BASC sorted out she who had to be obeyed in Winsford. :norty:
Have to admit mine was a lemon, couldn't hit a barn door with it if I was holding the latch.

If you call up the home office guidance it's listed as a perfectly viable calibre for UK quarry.

If you have justified the need for an additional calibre- like you did with woodland stalking- there shouldn't be a problem.

Email them asking where in the home office guidance they don't think it appropriate

Wish I'd checked the Home Office guidance first, always good to quote a particular paragraph, such as:

12.31 Suitable calibres for shooting deer range from .22 centrefire to .45-70.

It may well be that the feo doesn't have a clue but his supervisor does and approves it immediately.

A gentle polite nudge to the FEO saying "please see home office guidance stating the 45 70 is a suitable calibre for UK quarry".

If the supervisor tries to decline it they will at least know you have done a little research and they will have to justify their decision.

Could the FEO not just look up who has what in other counties by calibre on their system?

True, but from the PM I received, the FEO wants to know.
Too much rule invention by the uneducated set over us.
Here is an example; Me "I'm booked on Arran for a trip, I need a variation for a 7mm WSM that I am going to use on the scheme" Cheshire Manageress (Who insisted she was a manager), "I want you to provide me with all the names and adresses & contact no.s of all the farmers and landowners on Arran that you are going to shoot over":banghead:

Empty suits I call them. All the attire, no idea!

Had a 375 for 40 years for stalking but at last renewal it was taken off and only allowed for target shooting. Despite me going to Africa regularly.
I knew of quite a few others who had 375's for stalking, none of whom had been abroad for more than 10 years.
I used the FOI to find out how many in my area had 375 and larger for deerstalking.
Result, more than a dozen and my ammended FAC was returned promptly with it reinstated.
