500 NE Double.... but which one???

Hi All,

I have my cert in for variation for a DG double at the moment and drawing a bit of a blank as to my research into which one. I shot a 500 NE double made by Verney Carron in SA recently and loved it, shoot sweet and I found the recoil to be very manageable.

However I can't for the life of me find VC guns, specifically express rifles, for sale in the UK, can anyone help?

Other option is more than likely a Merkel 140 AE. Does anyone have any other suggestions as to manufacturers? Budget is up to £15K but the sweet spot is about £10K ideally

Heym and Krieghoff would be the other obvious options, I don’t know if chapuis do a 500 but personally having had a .375 double by them, some of their engineering is not as I would like when my life depended on it, which let’s face it is why you’d have a .500, it’s hardly for bunny bashing

I was warned off Kreighoff by my PH who by all accounts knows a couple of other guys who have had issues regulating their Kreighoff. Do you know who distributes Heym in the UK??

From what I've seen and read Kreighoff are one of the more accurate double rifles. If you buy a new Kreighoff it will come with all the info about what its regulated with or kreighhoff should be able to tell you if bought secondhand. If you buy a 500NE your hardly going to be shooting ammo by the cases load.
Merkel do a .500NE and will build you one to your spec.

I would recommend either Heym the 89b it is a nice rifle built on English lines or Verney Carron both can export I would recommend a trip to either factory once you've made up your mind to get the gun built to your specs.

The gun shop botley has a Merkel S/S double in 470ne brand new and its up for £7500. I know he will do a deal on it mate. Lovely rifle would love a double one day

That’s the one I linked to in post #2 but as we’ve now established he’s a lefty I think the field of secondhand offerings has shrunk somewhat!
