6.5 Creedmoor - Which ammo?

Crikey!!
Glad I reload, I’m lucky in that the s&b factory soft point that is £18/20 shoots to the same 1/2” group as the accubonds so if I run low I can grab a box and both local shops stock them
It was $22 to $36 a box for the Precison Hunter until the latest Madness started.~Muir

Morning all,

I went out and decided to use the last 5 rounds in each of the already open boxes of ammo, (still wanted to keep a box of each in reserve for use on the deer), to do another group with each option before deciding what to go with, and to see if they were still performing consistently with the previous groups. Still not up to 6 groups of each, but the more data the better.

For anyone interested, here are the results:

There really is very little in it, and it appears to be consistent with the results I’d had with the previous 3 groups of each.

The Sako did group slightly better, as has been the case throughout, although I rather embarrassingly pulled the 10th and (intended) final shot of the two groups. I know it’s a running joke how people sometimes justify the stray shots on their groups, and I make no excuses *but* ;) it was number 10 of 10 and I honestly can’t explain how poor my trigger control was as I took the shot. I think the knowledge that I’d be taking a picture and sharing the results, and that it had gone well up to that point, meant I’d talked myself out of the shot before I’d even taken it, lol. Clearly need to work on that!

Either way, I decided I couldn’t leave it on that note so I broke into my last box of ammo and, after a stern talking to myself, quickly took a 6th shot and thankfully rectified the situation. I’ve included measurements for the group both with & without my ‘pulled’ shot.

Given they’re so close in accuracy, and the fact I’ve had positive recommendations for both ammo, I’ll give each of the options a few outings on the deer and go with whichever one suits me best.

Thank you all again for the advice.

5pointer.

I’ve been using the 143 eldx, they do the job but seem more suited to the larger species as it’s smashing the small deer up quite a bit.
when I get more time I am going to play around with loads, and try some copper.

It’s a very accurate round, it is easy to shoot well.

personally I’ve stayed away from the eld-x as they seem, from the photo’s I’ve seen, to do a lot of damage. If you’re not worried about maximum meat return that is not an issue of course. Used 140 gr game king in previous creedmoor and it worked well. In the new one S&B 140 soft points shoot well but are a bit splatty!

Finally got a 129gr ABLR load sorted between lockdowns and took first couple of roe with it last weekend. Hit hard, and the little doe follower was a bit beat up, though she was small (10kg larder weight).

Out for a red in the morning so fingers crossed I’ll get to try the ABLR on something bigger.

Anyway, my point is all these bullets and those in your line up kill deer and kill them well. With the accuracy you’re getting it’ll kill them well out to a fair distance too, so I don’t think you’ll go wrong whatever you pick.

ELD X for me has been mixed results on Roe.
Head shot excellent results but body shot does a lot of meat damage so won't be buying these bullets for reloading.

To put the above into perspective this in comparative with long term 308 use utilising 150 and 165 gr bullets.

EXACTLY what I have found, head and neck they are devastating bang flop every time, body shots the exit looks like a cannon, I put one in the boiler room and it exited the back of the neck and the head was just left on by some straps of skin........ upon gralloch both shoulders smashed useless, heart, lung and liver turned to pate, the spine up to the neck exit was hardly recognisable, I only had the back straps and haunches salvage able, I really couldn’t believe what I was looking at as far as damage went.
This was a CWD so small species, 130 ish yards, I’ve shot a good few now and I feel uncomfortable with the damage it does

They are designed for longer shots, cant use a bullet designed to expand at extremely low velocity and expect it to perform amazingly at close range shots. Wrong bullet for the application

I shot my first CWD with ELDX and the guide (one of Malcs guys) said it was the biggest puffs of furs he’d ever seen. Damage was ok though. However I did shoot a roe at 200 yards the other day and it went in the boiler room but still managed to take a good portion of the neck (exit) and break one of its legs badly (found a fragment during butchering) so it does hit very hard.

So 130 yard shots with eldx are no good ? In which case it’s not the ammo for me, I need a reliable performer from 30-200 yards.

Given that eldx is supposed to be optimised for long range use, I actually think it’s reasonably polite at short range. If you don’t hit the shoulders, you get a perfectly clean carcass. I’ve shot small roe deer at very close range - 40m - through the chest, and lost no more meat than you’d expect from any other standard deer cartridge.

Through the shoulder, or go high and hit the spine, and yes - it’s a very nasty mess. Sometimes quite astonishing.

I have shot both the PH and the Sako Ammo in 6.5mm Creedmoor. Best Results I've had was with the Sako. That's shooting it through a Sako S20 rifle. That is some great groups there!

Currently using Federal Fusion 140gr soft point... Most shots have only been out as far as 150yds but they've proven to be an accurate round with good knock down power.....👍

I reload hornady eld-x 143gr with v n555 that work great , I also have shot plenty with s&b 140gr soft points .. I’m really impressed with the s&b’s at a smidge over pound a round 👍🏻
