6.5x54 Mannlicher-Schoenauer

OK yes I understand now. That used to be the case in France.
That is what I meant yes. And I assume it's quite simple to modify a 6.5MS so that it can take the 6.5x57, which is why I've seen quite a few MS rifles for sale in France on that chambering. I could be wrong though, for all I know the two cartridges could have completely different cases. I bet someone on here knows though.

That said, if I was going to buy an MS (which I'd love), I'd just find one in 7x64 and have done with it.

One for the rifle Smith's on here. Would it be possible to either rechamber or rebarrel a 6.5x54 1903MS take down to 6.5 X 55.
Not quite right PM.
The 6.5x54MSch cartridge is not illegal to use. However it was deemed so using the 160gn bullet due not achieving designated MV & ME in Scotland.
Using the 140gn bullet, legal MV & ME can be achieved, so absolutely legal to use in the UK.
The split rear bridge design makes fitting scopes difficult & expensive compared to more modern rifles. But it's certainly do-able. I've had two done fitted with QD claw mounts.
Talking about scope fitting, mine has claw mounts and lift up rear end. It has a useless Pecar on at present, but even with the narrow sighting end the bolt almost fouls the scope. What scopes have you got on because anything over 32mm rear end would be struck by bolt?
Open sights not too inaccurate.

I've just had Alan Rhone (well, Erwin actually) make rings to fit existing Rigby bases to a takedown. Owner now has a Z6 sitting in them.

Nice mate, but i assume also not inexpensive. If i may be so indescrete as to ask how much it was , (as i am also a MS owner 👍 ).

I have to say that one of my greater hopes for a lot of the new production tech we have coming out these days, is that cheaper and easier to produce bespoke mounting designs, (or new components for existing mounting designs), can be made.
Designs that can for example be made to fit the split bridge of a MS and 30mm tube scopes or aim points IF one wants that, of course.
I think i saw once such concept on youtube once, but it didnt yet exist for split bridge designs, unfortunately.

It should be. I have a 1903 rebarreled to 308. The bugger will be getting the magazine spool to fit the cartridge
Yeah, i have heard the spools are very tricky to get to fit another caliber.

Can the 1903 action take modern full pressure 308 loads though?

8x56 on the Takedown & 6x42 on the stutzen. Recknagel & Ziegler mounts system

I would not dream of trying to fire a .308 in a Mannlicher Schoenaur action. I use a moderate amount of Viht. N140 plus either a 140 0r 160 RN bullet and it is fine.

hello buddy,

Well not on a 1903 action , right ?
The post ww2 MS actions, and maybe even some earlier ones as well, was also barreled for 270 and 30.06. So i'd assume they can safely endure quite high pressures. No?

Absolutely true about the post-war rifles. I only have experience with the pre-war ones. Like school exams: Read the question very carefully.....

Yup, Erwin is the man to speak to about fitting scope bases/rings to old MSch rifles. He'll get you exactly the correct ones, Recknagel & Ziegler are fitted to both of my rifles.

I can't say whether this is possible or not, but I have a feeling if it can be re-chambered or re-barrelled to 6.5x55, there may be an issue with the bolt face/ejection.
Callum Fergusson at Precision Rifles, Tomintoul would definitely know, probably also Norman Clarke in Rugby.
They'd be the men to speak to.
Pics of mine are in my photo gallery.

The old scope is playing up but very difficult to fit another. Anything with more than 32 mm eye bell the bolt fouls and won't come back to eject/load.
The mounts are claw front and release at rear end, don't know what sort. Once I get front block off I may just use open sights. Ongoing at present, an interesting time having had one shot, one kill, but no more until I sort it.

I know of one that could be available in 7x64

And the biggest challenge when changing cartridges on the MS is the magazine, as the rotor as machined to fit the cartridge concerned.

And going back to the question of rebarreling / rechambering the 6.5x54 to 6.5x55 etc simpler to reload the 6.5x54 to deer legal velocities with a 140 gn bullet.

Was a 7x64 somewhere in North Linc's.

I picked up a 1912 Greek MS barreled action that has been converted to 7x57 cheap on Gunbroker recently -- a little project rifle. It had the flip over side mounted pachmyer bases on it. A little bit of patience on gunbroker and I found just the right rings for $25. Still need a stock, bottom metal, trigger and screws. Piece by piece...
