6.5x55 vs 7x57 Why?

What an interesting thread, I find it difficult to choose between the 6.5X55 and the 7X57, so I have both!

its funny when you read popular press and marketing materials about "modern" calibres (or those they have decided to sell more of!)

I hate marketing hype but it appears that all the attributes of a cartridge seem to be focused on "accuracy" and "flat trajectory"...this amuses me as I feel many people seem to think they are buying some kind of star wars laser!

I keep banging on about it but the difference in trajectory in most popular stalking calibres with bullet ranges of 75-200gr is negligible at stalking ranges.
Accuracy hasnt changed significantly and I defy anyone to tell the difference in accuracy between one cartridge and another and exclude the rifle, the ammunition and more significantly the fleshy thing pulling the trigger.

Last year I shot all my big game with the 7x57. This year I did the same with the 6.5x55. The deer didn't seem to know the difference.~Muir

One year I was hung up on the then new Remington "Short Action Ultra Mags" . So that year the first deer I killed was a small 8 pointer with the 260 REM in a stainless synthetic Remington Model 7 , at the crack of the gun the deer hit the ground . Maybe a week or so after that i used a stainless synthetic Model 7 in 300 SAUM to shoot a pair of 6 pointers that morning and like the 8 point these were both boom flop .

So my thought was just how quick can they hit the ground DEAD RIGHT THERE . Now we all know very well that no gun is gonna make ALL it's shots boom flop dead right there .

My own personal assesment of the 6.5x55 and 7x57 is that I like them both . At the moment I only own one 6.5x55 and thats a military mauser . For a 7x57 I don't own a bolt gun at the moment but rather 2 drillings and a combination gun all chambered for 7x57R . In the past I've owned a pair of Ruger 77R's in 7x57 as well as a Kimber 89BGR Super American . And they all shot very nicely . Typically I loaded the 7x57 bolt guns with the Nosler 140 Solid Base or later the Nosler 140 BT . The 6.5x55's I've owned have been loaded with the Hornady 129 SST and the Hornady 140 SST with very good results on paper .

I am certainly thinking two of the next guns I want to add to my accumulation would be a Ruger #1A in a 7x57 and a 6.5x55 either in a Ruger #1A or a CZ550 FS .

I love all them metrics, I have two 7x57's and three 8x57's. I still want a 6.5 Swede, a 7.5 Swiss and a 7.65 Argie.
I like the the fact that all these rounds accomplish their success with lower pressures and less recoil and still hit like
a ton of bricks.

I nailed a couple of Roe on Monday with 6.5x55 140gr SSTs.

1x heart/lung and 1x neck. Both dropped instantly, so very happy with that!

Now hanging in the deer fridge, ready to be butchered at the weekend... "Children, we eat tonight!"

congrats on the "double Roe" ! looks like you'll have a busy, rewarding, weekend !

Ta. In trouble at home though, as I fly to the UAE on Sunday for a week on business, and will be in the garage all of Saturday with these 2...!

Just can't win sometimes
