Hi. I'm just starting to get in to stalking. Shot my first muntjac a couple of weeks ago. :-D Just waiting for my variation to come back for a 6.5x55 and was wondering if anyone has any advice on what would be a good second hand rifle to buy in this calibre?

Tikka T3 in any flavour... ridiculously accurate out of the box (even more so in 6.5) and the trigger is probably the best out there for the money... fantastic rifle that will serve you well.

Agreed. Would be my choice as a starter rifle and chambering.

I love the Tikka T3 - light and accurate, comes with rings for its integral base. A mild cartridge like the 6.5x55mm is ideal for such a light and handy rifle. I have the Lite in 7mm-08. If you can get it with iron sights, do so. ( We cannot, in the USA, and the 6.5x55 is a rare as hen's teeth.)

But, if you like wood, and iron sights, look at the CZ 550. It is a bit heavier, but is a real hunting rifle, and a value. If you are hunting woodland and hills, the 550 FS ( Full Stock, Mannlicher style), is a neat rifle.

Just throwing it out there - my brother has bought a new Bergara B14 in 6.5x55. First impressions are that its a very nice handling rifle. Will be putting it through its paces on the target this weekend so will report back. Synthetic is £625 but then you need rings, mounts etc etc. Apparently will take all rem 700 add ons, and already has a timney trigger. trigger pull on it feels really good, but it was adjusted before it left Brock and norris. comes screw cut.

as for the calibre, it's what i have alongside .243, its a really nice polite round that shouldnt elicit any flinching etc.

Looking forward to the report back on the Bergara. Pity they don't seem to do any in .222/.223 yet.

My shop in the City has 6.5 SE Tikka Hunter in stock. Beautiful rifle. $749 US.~Muir

I stopped by a gun store in my travel today, and found an 1895 Chilean Mauser by Ludwig Lowe, in 6.5x55, chopped into a sporterized carbine, with a silver Tasco scope. I wanted to cry.

Somebody pop the original 7x57 off and slip a Carl Custaf onto it?? I remember when SARCO was selling new/surplus in the white CG barrels for $30-$40. I bought several of them. I still have a couple of 1894 Carbine barrels. One barreled action I put together was on a 1910 Mexican Small Ring 98. It's inletted into some English Walnut but that's as far as I got. Need to finish that one.

I am still looking for a hacked on Dutch Mannlicher turn bolt in 6.5x53R. I have a new barrel ready to go for it. If you see one? ~Muir

I will keep my eyes peeled for you. At lunch, I found another old gun store, and two dusty boxes of Swift 6.5mm 140-gr A-Frame bullets. I was ready to get a box, but then found 4 boxes of Hornady Superperformance .375 H&H 270-gr for $34.00 a box.... cheap as components!

This Chilean chop job probably is one of those SARCO barrels. Mauser made fewer than 100 sample Mausers for sales purposes, in the 1894 and 1895. They sent 75 to 1894s to Sweden, a mix of rifles, calvary carbines, and sporting rifles, to put the 6.5x55mm Swedish cartridge in the hands of military and hunting pals of the king. I have one of them, a sporter, which has been refinished and reblued, and sights updated by the original family heirs. I shoot standard loads of 140-gr at 2,650 from its 25.5 inch barrel, and save the hotter loads for my modern 6.5x55. I love hunting with this old rifle and its iron sights.
