I think we all are entitled to our own opinions, I for one am fascinated by this long range shooting, if you are without sin cast the first stone Mole old mate. You ever missed and wounded anything?

Not the point, legal - I'm fascinated by long range stuff as well - in it's proper time & place (ie on the ranges or sniping proper). None of us are without sin but it helps to try and avoid it if we can. There, I've said my piece, put me down as an unbeliever when it comes down to long range hunting . As you say, we are all entitled to our own opinions.

Using 'sin' as a reference point really is the crux of this debate. Douglas 'Guest' who posted the link to the video posed the question "what do you think?" Responses seem to be cleanly divided into two. While some folk clearly focus on the technical competence of the shooter (obviously very high) others express concern over the ethics of such behaviour. The 'techies' seem unwilling to engage in an ethical debate, but simply focus on the mantra that with the right skills, right equipment, adequate practice etc it is all OK. For it really to be all OK there has to be some ethical framework which underpins it - which was why I asked Shawn what the purpose of the 950 yard shot was - cull, meat, what? It is only when you know why someone does something that you can start to get close to understanding their behaviour.

Bandit Country,

Your right I skipped right over the why part. I always hunt for meat. But I also geat a great deal of personel satisfaction from long range hunting. Some guys like to stalk so close you can here them breathing (been there, done that, got the shirt) some guys like to use archery gear (I know one guy who got a small buck with a spear) some guys like to ambush from close range with a handgun. I just like the personel challenge of long range much like others like the challenges of the stalk. I spent a long time as a law enforcement officer and a good deal of it stalking things more exciting than deer.
When it truly comes to ethics I beleive the only issue is are you taking a high % shot or simply hoping for the best. For me the long range shot is a higher % shot than a closer moving shot. As I posted earlier my few mishaps have come from closere range engagements while in stalking mode. I don't see the method of take as long as it is legal an ethics issue. How you apply that technique is where the ethics come into play.
