A .25 for '25

I've never understood why 25-06 isn't/wasn't more popular....at it's most simplest it's a big volume case chucking out a small bullet... a point and shoot laser pen

That's the issue; it's over bore. Eats barrels.

For hunting it's probably acceptable. But for any type of competitive shooting, it's just too over bore.

And if a cartridge isn't being used in some type of competition sport, well, that's a huge drop in demand when compared to those cases that are. Hunters expend, what, maybe 200 rds a year? Competitive shooters can expend that amount in a single day.

That makes for a depressing read considering i keep getting an itch for a .257 Weatherby  .

Not being a target shooter i can look on rifle barrels like i do tyres for my Jeep. They are consumables to be replaced when worn out. That is why God created Gunsmiths. :)

But lads, - in the age of the copper bullet, hasnt the 25-06 effectively pretty much become a magnum, just like the other 30-06 class powder capacity catridges has from 7 mm and down?

Those cartridges were created to shoot deer suited projectiles at around 3100-3200 fps, but with copper projectiles often being lower in weight than lead ones, they're now potentially doing that job 200 fps faster, taking them into what i understand as magnum territory, speed wise, whilst the x57 or 55 class cartridges are shooting deer suited projectiles at speeds that used to be 270 or 25-06 land.

So in essense, if one wants to do what 270 or 25-06 used to do, should one with non leads actually step down a class in cartridge powder capacity wise?

Same as anything else yes its overbore but deoends how your shooting it...
Can eke it out by avoiding rapid hot strings when on gongs or paper

Mines lasted years but its a kreiger

i know a very good alpine hunter who uses that, and ok, it might burn the barrel, but if you're using it for hunting primarily, how many seasons is that still of realistic use ? decades, i reckon, so yep, if that's what suits your hunting style best, i reckon it's worth it. But each to their own, of course👍 🤠

Glad to hear it….. enjoy the new toy when it arrives. Don’t worry about all the barrel burning stuff….. unless you are doing lots of target work it will last for years….. and if you are reloading then you can make rounds to suit your needs. I push 75g vmax at fox’s … like a laser!

A friend of mine was refused one by Northumbria police about 8/9 years ago he would have been 72 years of age by then had a license from early 70s . No rhyme or reason given he wanted it as a second rifle ….
In the end they gave him on other 65.55 he had basc rep with him
To this day we still Carnt make sense of it

Bought a Sako 75 rebarrelled at 24" by Mike Norris last year. Used it on red hinds earlier this year. Absolutely happy with it. Marginally more recoil than a .243, but hits noticeably harder. 200 yard kills DRT. Used 102 grain Yew Tree copper. Got some barnes 101 grain LRX to try too. Using RS 60 powder currently.

Just about to put a variation in for a 25-06. Can't wait!
It's a great calibre. Years ago I had a Varmint Tikka in .25-06, for foxes and red deer culling. Although I've promised myself to stick to .30-06 for all my UK native deer species, I reckon a .25 Creedmoor with a slightly tighter twist would be a fun addition to my very small collection.

I’m playing with the idea of putting a faster twist barrel on it next time to push those big bc bullets designed for the 25 creedmore…. Any one done it yet and can advise?
Your gunsmith should be able to guide you on twist rate, throat dimensions etc. I suppose it depends on what bullet you have in mind.
