A positive thread

This might be controversial on a shooting forum, but if i could only do one countryside "activity" for rest of my life, I think I'd choose checking larsen traps!! 😆 Im like a kid at Christmas as I go on my spring rounds & see them little black & white buggers hopping about inside!!

After my recent visit from a superstar A list bird - a Bittern - we have had a great few weeks coppicing and laying a mile of hedgerow

The latest hedge just put in is sprouting like mad !

I then got an email saying i had been nominated for a conservation - habitat creation/ management award to the National Gamekeepers - Happy happy !

What a totally awesome day we have all had
40 odd shooting a few - lot - of clays from 12 - 85 ! Thats what its all about
8 beers mint

I wondered if it was you lot - you went through a few cartridges, that's for sure 👍 👍

I cleared them all up - in fairness they were all bagged up - so i along with the wife managed to lift the bag onto the bonnet - just
I drove down the tracks - steady - but in a rush to go stalking - got 2 munties ! - until 200 yards from the yard the bag slipped and about 4000 empties went all over the floor ! hahaha

While out foxing the other night ! - Just in our car park !
I turned if off before the greylag - canada geese came - It missed the moorhen - And then the Tawny - Barn and Little Owls . The kestrel was hovering but made no sign . I was a bit late for the calls of the greenfinch always there and the reed bunting and bull finches ! - Bloody love it !

Had our local wildlife trust do a botanical survey yesterday - just on the woodland to update its status
It has not been surveyed by them for over 20 years and is classed as unfavourable

Well yesterday after our works the surveyor was over the moon - a "good" woodland has 40-60 species - we had 102 recorded !!
Happy days again !

Breeding birds next week ! - we also had a ringed ouzle the other night !

Had a pond survey done today on a series of splashes dug for wildlife trust - and result newts spotted !
Just waiting on DNA as to what type as they didnt want to catch them to ID
Also said they will be happy to pen a piece detailing how shooting and conservation can work together

We have worked with James/Jim for several years as part of the District Level License Scheme for Great crested newts. This project helps to replace and create the aquatic habitats that are lost due to building developments across many regions.

Over the years James/Jim has created ten ponds across his land specifically to be part of the scheme - helping to create a local refuge for this red listed species.

This is in addition to all the other ponds that he has been creating across the estate. These clusters of aquatic and marginal zones sit within a fantastic larger mosaic of mixed habitats including woodland, hedgerows, grassland, wildflower meadows and cover crops.

It’s this variety of habitats that makes the estate so special and leads to its ever increasing levels of biodiversity. Creating such a multitude of possibilities for wildlife within a shooting estate really does work and improves the chances for species recovery for so many that are in massive decline nationally.

The conservation and shooting sectors are often at loggerheads; but here there is plenty of evidence that things can also be harmonious and work together for the benefit of all.

James/Jim has a great passion and enthusiasm for improving the odds for wildlife, whilst bridging the gap between the shooting and conservation sectors.

Helping to create such a wonderful and harmonious estate that is filled with the most diverse array of habitats and biodiversity that will hopefully continue to improve as time goes by.
