Wanted: A very long shot.

This is a very long shot, and huge ask of anyone who would even consider it.

I am hoping to take my twin nephews out on their first real hunting trip at the end of the month. My plan is to take them to my syndicate ground where they can stalk with me and learn about deer, woodland, wildlife and hopefully see a deer shot and all that comes after that. All while enjoying the great adventure of being away from home and camping out, cooking their own grub and having a good time.

However I am concerned that the midge situation up in Scotland may spoil what will be their first taste of stalking, and maybe to the point where they don't want to do it again, which would be a great shame.

So I'm looking for a back up plan, which is where I hope someone on here could help?
My request is if there is anyone out there that would let me bring these two lads (8 years old and are sensible lads) onto their ground and stalk with me? Or even take one of the lads out while I took the other and vice versa.

Of course I would expect to pay for the stalking and would be looking to shoot a munty or roe buck. Nothing special just a cull animal that could give them the experience. If we could camp up somewhere that would be great but if not we'd find somewhere local to stay.
I have them at the end of the month for 4 days so would love to have a couple days out stalking, I'll take them canoeing or camping etc to fill the other days.

I am an experienced stalker, with all the bits of paper. I consider myself a genuine outdoors man who appreciates the countryside and all the responsibility one has to keeping it as it should be. I realise what a privilege it would be should someone be good enough to accommodate us and can assure of the greatest care and respect would be given to their ground.

If you think you could do something and would like to talk direct to me please pm and I'll give you a call.
I have a great bond with these lads and as their farther is fairly absent in their life I would like to see them take up some of the things I love in life. I hope in time it will help shape them and their way of life. Maybe they'll carry me out stalking when I'm an old man, or push me zimmer frame for me!

I look forward to someone coming up with some idea's and will cross my fingers.
Thanks.

Good luck woodmaster If only I had the ground.
did a similer thing for a young local lad a few years ago and the reward is watching them learn :tiphat:to you

Was out in Hexham over the weekend... the little buggers were brutal (I always find it a challenge when you are breathing them in!!!)... daren't think what it would be like further north!!!!!

Hi Jake. I've picked them up a couple midge jackets last week when I was up in Inveraray. I hope the weather is dull and overcast with a nice wind which will keep the midges down a bit. If it looks like that'll be the case then they'll manage in the jackets, but if they are really bad it would spoil the time trying to be out around camp etc. One of them does suffer a bit if bitten by mosquito's with the bites swelling up. So I really don't want their first proper trip away to be a test of endurance.

That sounds fantastic, definitely worthy of "favourite uncle" status, and it's the type of thing that sadly these days more and more kids never even come close to experiencing. I hope you get a suitable offer and the twins enjoy it.

Anybody considering this request, I can vouch for Woodmaster having bought from and sold to him and received a lot of help and offers of help. Top man, and he has a dog from the best litter ever born ;)

I could offer you a possible space in September on Fallow prickets, but cannot help you until then as I am booked out on the Roe.
Let me know if this is of any use to you.

I took my son, as a belated twenty-first gift, to Chippenham, in Cambridgeshire....a member on here runs the stalking...and found that his whole experience was superb.

A sort of a DSC 1 introduction, then a spell in a high seat trying for a shot and the ability if successful to field dress it. I am sure that the itinerary could be modified to suit the age of the boys.

I would thoroughly recommend this package as they will have fun learning about the different deer, how to recognise them, etc., etc.. And a large glass bowl of Kit Kat on hand! Clean, professional, safe, well conducted. Everything you might want.

Well what a turn out. In some ways I'm not surprised as I've seen some great generosity from members of this site over the last few years. That said I am surprised that some of you would put your neck out for such a request.
Malc: The boys are like many kids these days and live with their mum. Dad lives else where but does have them for some of the holidays. This year they are going to his house for 3 weeks and have a holiday with mum booked up so I only get them for a few days right at the start of the sumer holidays. If my origional trip doesn't work out I may well take you up on a trip over a weekend. Your ground would lend itself to doing some foot stalking with them. I'll keep in touch.
Buckaroo. I'm happy to travel anywhere really. It's 400 mile to my syndicate ground, but well worth the drive, which would be part of the adventure being so far away.
Enfield. Where did you go in Norfolk? And what did you do there?

Drove from near Leicester and had a good hearty cooked full breakfast at a farm shop cum café just ten minutes away. Then on to the estate. Google Chippenham, Cambridgeshire Battle of La Hogue and you'll see pictures of the estate.

Then a superb classroom presentation of what, I think, was basically a DSC 1 Course. Slides of deer, how to recognise, reaction to shot and etc. Then on to a zero range on the estate with the .243 moderated estate rifle to fire a test group AND a mock DSC 1 shooting test.

Finally my son went off to sit in a high seat whilst I stayed in the classroom and ate Kit Kat and watched Sky News on the flat screen television.

Had my son got a deer then he would have been shown how to field dress it. The man that does all this is on here....just post a question headed Chippenham - Stalking and I think that you'll get a response.

It was very good in all aspects. That he didn't get a deer is just that sometimes as you know they don't want to participate in the matter!

Interesting line: is this the boys, mothers or fathers choice? things are not always how they seem so please don't judge us all the same.
Eldon. I'm not passing judgement on anyone, let alone someone who I don't even know. How the hell would I know you have kids or not, and whether they live with you or their mum? It's simply a fact that many more kids live in single parent families than when I was a kid. As such they often through no fault of their own miss out on the experiences they may have had should the other parent be more prevalent in their lives.
I'm not suggesting people are bad because they don't live with the other parent, and realise to stay in a difficult relationship just to fit in with some peoples idealism would not necessarily be of benefit to the kids either.
All I am saying is that in this case their farther does not play a big role in the direction his children may take, and I want to try to give them some of the experiences I had so much fun doing as a kid.

Thanks to those of you who have so generously offered help. I now have a bit of a plan hatched with a member on here who seemed to understand just what I wanted to do. Although I may not have quite the freedom to do as I would up on the syndicate, it sounds like we should have a lot of fun and hopefully make some new friends, and learn a lot. I'm looking forward to it. Not sure if people would be happy to be named, but you know who you are, thanks for your generosity and wanting to help the next generation.

Hope it goes well mate and well done to those that have helped to hatch a plan. Please let us know how it goes, take plenty of pics and do a write up when you get back.

Have fun,

Stratts

I will do that Stratts. Hopefully I'll remember to take some pics. I normally get on and do stuff then think "s**t I haven't taken any pics".
Hopefully we'll get to shoot a deer and the whole experience will work out.

Hi Townie. Thanks for taking the time to post the info. I know Simon and have stalked with him a number of times. He has some great ground and beautiful woodland for sure. I think with the way the estate runs and other people like the gamekeeper and forester etc etc it would not be something he would be able to do much other than guided stalking.
