aim point or z8i

Which in peoples opinion would be the best for driven boar aimpoint or z81 with the illuminated red ring, to go on a 30-06 sauer, I am currently using a vortex strike eagle with a halo xmas tree type reticule, which I find a bit vague on occasions.

An AimPoint Red Dot sight (0 magnification) would be my choice. They do a very nice 'Hunter' range.
But book yourself in an a running wild boar range and try out a few different set-ups. Those with red dot sights seem to hit the wild boar in the correct spot much more than those who use a scope - even if it is a Premium Branded low magn. scope.

Ditch the vortex and idea of aimpoint. Buy a S&B Exos 1-8x24 FD7 and you will be golden for all your hunting. At 8x, whilst the FOV isn’t huge, it’s more than enough for shots to 1000yds if you are so inclined. If you are a knob twiddler, they can fit mil or moa turrets as well, better imho than the decorative visual impairment you are currently using...being a bit cheeky here, but am also serious!

Aimpoint is great for boar,, Erik is right, but you are buying another set of optics...I just like the idea of 1 scope for one rifle, one barrel, one ammo choice, etc , keep it simple

I have tried red dots / aim points. I much prefer a 1-4 or 1-6 power scope. I have just got a Docter V6 1-6 with a Red dot. Best of both worlds. Very wide field of view at 1x with easy to see dot, the 6 for a longer shot.

I have done a bit of driven boar shooting and have actually twice taken a longer shot at a fox and Roe trying to sneak through. In my experience most of those who are guns on a driven shoot seem to use low power scopes. Beaters and trackers either have open sights or small red dots.

Strangely enough Peter, I'd been keeping an eye on that scope too; it looks like a really interesting proposition, especially as at x1 it allows both eyes to be kept open & the eye doesn't need to be central to the scope as per an aimpoint. I think this feature is the best point of Aimpoints; the eye can be at any position in relation the scope & it will still shoot to the dot.

Anyway, here's the scope on special offer & I've dealt with the company before & can recommend them.

That's all very nice if you have 1'750 pounds to spend on something you might only use twice a year if you are lucky,
An aimpoint micro 2 is perfect for driven Boar and also general stalking at normal woodland ranges.

I just said it looked liked an interesting proposition (although I accept it's far from cheap)! Actually all I have these days is a S&B 6x42 & an Aimpoint Micro 2 & that works well enough for me. It's just that there are occasions when it would be helpful to have everything within the one scope.

no, my point is to use it as an all round all year scope. 1-8x24 or similar that is, or Leica 1.25-8x32

personally I’m an iron sight and 4x32 or 4x36 guy, but I know I’m a unique breed

hi there

I shoot with a aimpoint micro h2 on 300 winmag helix never lets me down would never swap it for anything else , driven & standing quarry up to 200 yard's .

There's no contest, if you got the dough get a low power variable with true 1x and illuminated reticle with bright center dot. At 1x it duplicates the Aimpoint (or somewhat better) and you'll be grateful of the magnification when you need it.

Good advice, shame we don't have more running boar ranges.

That's one heck of a statement :suss: "IF" it were true, maybe it would be because the people who are prepared to go out and buy a pretty much dedicated driven game sight, have done so, because they tend to do driven game on a more regular basis ?

The best sights/scopes, are the ones you feel most confident using, and for driven game, something that gives fast, easy acquisition. But ultimately, neither sight, nore scope teaches "lead", only experience, practise, natural ability, and luck :D

I shoot my 4x scopes with both eyes open no problem. Would happily shoot running game with a 4x tbh. In all honesty, do people close one eye when shooting rifles?? I sure don’t! Who shoots a shotgun with one eye closed?? No one (trained) hopefully...

If you have a scope sight with an illuminated dot, and you keep both eyes open, you can shoot with the front lens cover closed.
Ken.

I have three aimpoint micros and have a couple of 1-4 and 1-6 scopes. My recommendation is to get both with QD mounts. The aimpoint keeps the weight down. If you are using a 30 cal on animals larger than rabbits at ranges from 10-150m then acquisition time and handling are critical. Also you should never geta weatherby eyebrow in the heat of the moment.

Thanks everybody for the responses, it looks like I will try the aimpoint for simplicity and cost, and weight, unfortunately it will mean new mounts etc.

If you are going the Aimpoint Micro H1 or H2 then getting the QD mount for it is really worth it. I know its extra but makes swapping over that much faster on a picatinny or weaver rail.
