Wanted: Alpine Ibex

Good afternoon all! Hopefully this should be in the big game section, if not apologies.

Have been thinking about hunting Ibex for a while, and alpine hunting in general seems like a fantastic challenge. I wondered firstly if anyone has done this before that I could chat to, about their experience; and also, if anyone knows someone that offers this, ideally in Austria or Switzerland. Any advice would be gratefully received, as I’m just starting to think about late 2020 or early next year.
Thank you!

I have two Austrian friends who have both shot a few Ibex in the Alps but it is very expensive, I could be wrong on the normal price quoted as we were all on the way to being very ‘merry’ at the time but from hazy recollection €7000+ For a representative with medals being quite a bit more.

They explained that all the Ibex shot by them and their families (all were hunters) were done for free or cheap when Ibex in the region were struck with what I think (from the translation difficulties), was sheep scab or similar at which point the hunters are instructed to level everything effected or in the group in the area identified. Unfortunately it’s very unlikely a foreigner will get the chance to get this type of ‘offer’.

I imagine a quick look in the classifieds of Jagd und Hund, Jagen or Pirsch magazines which should be available online might have an advert which isn’t through a sporting agent and is direct with the outfitter which may be (slightly) cheaper.

I’m interested in hunting Ibex also but think the Alps is too rich for my pocket and am considering Spain albeit it isn’t (to my limited knowledge) the same sub species.

Scarcity value is also increasingly a major factor; the lovely ones in the brochure are increasingly scarce, and sought after by trophy hunters wordlwide.

Thanks for this, yeah expecting it to be 10k or so from a bit of preliminary research. Maybe now is a good time to book? Am going to ask guys I stalk with if they know someone in Europe and try it that way.

Hi, if you are interested in Ibex / alpine hunting may I recommend that you get in touch with Florent Teicher Teicher Outfitting – Guide et consultant grande chasse.
He is an established outfitter and guide, straightforward and totally honest to deal with.
Florent is a friend of mine, but I am not connected to his business in any other way.
PM me if you need any more information.

Hello

I'm not sure how wedded you are to Austria or Switzerland for Ibex but Spain offers some really good Ibex (five species) and I think you'll find the prices, whilst still fairly high, aren't as high as Austria or Switzerland. I've never used this particular agent but I understand they are good and can cater for most needs.

Hope that helps

hi pm me got friend of mine in spain thanx

I’ve only shot ibex in Spain and Kyrgyzstan, so can’t comment on alpine ibex from experience. If you are wedded to hunting alpine ibex, as others have said, there are cheaper ibex to hunt. But each to there own, it’s your choice. In terms of my experience both of my ibex hunts were very different experiences. The Spanish hunt is more of a holiday hunt, very comfortable accommodation, hot, and lots of walking. The Asian hunt is an adventure, removed from civilisation, spike camps, on horse back, harsh conditions. By adventure read difficult/dangerous/potentially lethal and out of your comfort zone. Hunting in the alps will probably be somewhere between these two. My advice would be to hunt chamois in the alps if you want the alpine hunting experience. And then If you want to hunt an ibex go to either of the countries I mention above depending on your desires. Or better yet do all of them.

edit; I forgot to mention that Ibex hunting in Spain or Kygz is about half that of central europe. Also a mature alpine ibex looks like a juvenile siberian ibex.

I think Spain is better value for Ibex. My brother in law has shot some huge old medal heads in the high mountains in Central Spain.
