Banning Trail Hunting - impact on Deer recovery?

I can't help feeling some of the Hunts should not be surprised by the proposal:

"Trail hunting is totally abused in my area. There is not even the slightest effort to lay a trail. The hunt is just cracking on as if there was never any change in the law. Any ban to trail hunting is the result of behaviour like this. To preserve the remaining field sports we have we all need to operate a bit smarter and be aware the world is watching with a very critical eye."

On the contrary we need to tell the ban it leftie brigade to clear off and mind their own business. Divide and rule is the mantra followed by our opponents to magnificent effect, appeasement gets us nowhere.

Hiven that the legislation will be produced by a government bureaucracy which generated anti-terrorist legislation which permitted the arrest of people as innocuous as trainspotters and peaceful protesters, and is staffed by "experts" who couldn't identify the animals they're legislating over, I think some of the comments above may be a touch complacent.
I cant believe you are saying this Mr Apthorpe, but well said, cant believe I'm agreeing with you either!:tiphat:

It’s bizarre how things that are useful and efficient such as removing moderators from FAC’s take ages to get through parliament but things against us seem to waft through…..anyone would think they are targeting low hanging fruit for political gain! 🙄

How do you know?

Yes, we do need to operate a bit smarter and to that end resisting the temptation to make unwarranted claims about other people's field sports is of prime importance.

Sorry did not mean to like that, no offence.

I believe the hounds will be shot or dumped on the RSPCA.
No worries mate my post wasn’t against you or your post in any way, I was just generally musing - I do hope people step in to help and reduce the harm that the ramifications that this idiotic and pointless law will create.

.Gov Bill to ban Trail Hunting - Deer impact?
So we expect a bill to be shortly released that will ban Trail Hunting.

* How will this impact the use of dogs to follow and recover wounded/injured deer?
*How will this impact training those dogs for this task?
*Should we as deer stalkers be adding our voices to the consultation - before the law of unintended consequences out-laws this vital and humane

It’s reasonably likely that the Scottish hunting with dogs legislation will be used as a template by Westminster. That does allow for the use of two dogs or less to track injured deer, albeit I believe Nature Scot may have interpreted the legislation differently ( a good example of unintended consequence ).

However, those pushing for tighter legislation will be trying to ensure that the staghound packs in the south west which currently use two hounds are prevented from functioning. So in short yes @IanF, I think those involved in stalking and using dogs to recover deer should absolutely watch what is proposed with close interest and be prepared to respond to the consultation if necessary.

Surely the immediate question is what happens to the existing hound packs? I can't see them being kept simply for the 'visuals' associated with a County country fair and the Boxing Day village parade.

Likely vast majority put down but probably a few of the bigger and better supported packs would keep a core to preserve the bloodlines in hope of a less repressive government getting in.

I use 10 dogs in a pack for picking up hope it doesn't effect our work ,also we usually have a hare cull when the crops have been harvested that's going to be awkward there soon ploughed up ,I must admit it does feel like the government hates our countryside, the sabs will definitely be coming for all shooting and fishing next

Has there been clarification on exceptions for bloodhound packs in the new bill?
Not 100% sure, the Labour MP who is pushing for the ban has stated that he has no issue with the bloodhound packs, just the foxhounds, harriers, etc., who bend the rules.

We could fight dirty of course, and promise all Labour MPs that the packs will be put down in front of a poster saying "Killed by order of the Labour Government" and post each one on social media.

David.

I would hope that the rural communities band together to give dogs new homes if needed after this legislation?
When I was whipping in for a local pack. We had a hound taken by some locals thinking they were giving it a better life- they were phoning the kennels around midnight apologising asking for the hound to be collected after it had trashed there sofa. We also had another hound disappear (white Welsh hound called daffodil). Beginning of the season. Last day of that season we had an extra hound in the lorry. Daffodil was back. Very fat and happy to be home. Guessing whoever had her brought her back as she was too much work or she escaped where she was being kept.

These are dogs whose entire raison d'être is to go hunting in packs. One might as well try to conserve Atlantic salmon by keeping one in my child's aquarium. It is senseless.

There is no escaping the fact that this bill is being pushed by people who are so devoted to assaulting the traditional fabric and rural culture that they'd prefer to have thousands of dogs killed than leave things be. There is no aspect of animal welfare to this.
