BASC elections, Martyn Jones hunt ban advocate

To quote Martyn Jones

"Having seen our sport being eroded by the antis over the years, and now that I am retired, I would like to use the expertise I have in achieving political and public relations results to help BASC in its sterling efforts to stem and reverse the tide against all the various aspects of our sport. An attack on one is an attack on all.
"

This being the case how does he explain his support for banning foxhunting?

BASC Member for 2 years
vice chairman of the British Shooting Sports Council
worked with BSSC and its individual organisations such as the NRA, NSRA, CPSA and of course BASC for many years.
life member of the NRA.
involved in most forms of shooting since I first went rough shooting with my uncle over 50 years ago.
mainly a target and clay pigeon shooter now but have enjoyed game shooting.

one of the handful of MPs who refused to vote for the firearms restrictions following both the Hungerford and Dunblane tragedies,
So basically, likes target shooting, dislikes hunting and is good with committees...

Thank goodness it's not my shooting organisation, one could if so minded think his appointment a calculated long term infiltration?

This having been a tactic through history?

Should do wonders for their membership?

Don't underestimate this guy, I've seen him in action. He was Labour leader on the old Clwyd County Council when I worked there, he's a very eloquent and committed left winger who then went on to be the local Labour MP. If, and I do say if, he's on an anti hunting or game shooting soapbox he can do a lot of damage and not inconceivably scupper the whole organisation.

It'd be interesting to know if he would see these posts or perhaps would be directed to them by a another BASC official or employee. He may like to comment and perhaps put some of the worries and doubts expressed here to rest - or the opposite.

Or possibly even say one thing and do another ? I'm not saying he is an anti, I don't know the bloke from Adam, but he's hardly likely to come on here and admit to wanting to destroy the sport of shooting is he?

His voting record over Hungerford and Dunblane presumably are public record so perhaps we need to wait and see.

David.

Whereas the RSPCA was able to convince a judge that they should be able to do background checks on new members applying to join so they could weed out those with a shooting interest and deny them membership.

Precisely, look what Swift got away with!

Perhaps David BASC on here will reply in due course?

Martin Jones is a friend of a friend I met him about 8 years while shooting pheasants he is a nice enough guy I think his anti fox hunting thing comes from being a Labour MP and the class war bit. When I met him I did not know who he was until later but he is an ardent shooting man and if BASC can use his contacts in Westminster to good effect good for them.BUT he was a politcian so if he is speaking he will be telling the truth as he sees it.

I can save them the money checking me out.
Our core values are a million miles apart since they went "off piste."

Having worked alongside government for over 17 years at senior levels and would agree that this is exactly how this reads and comes across.
For me it feels a bit like, "no longer an MP, need some income".
I don't know enough about Martyn, so will do myself an intellectual favour and try and understand a bit more about him - what I do know is that he was/is a POLITICIAN not necessarily an ACTIVIST..

The good news is that we've all spotted him; this awareness has to be a good thing and we can vote him out next time around if we're concerned, equally we can vote him in if his influence is positive.

Dear All,

As a member of staff i cannot get involved in lobbying for a council member before, during or after the election

All members of BASC are entitled to vote in the Council elections and all members are sent ballot papers together with a bio on each prospective member

The nomination of prospective and the elections are all carried out as per the Rules and Constitution of BASC and overseen by independent scrutineers

If members wish to change or amend rules then they can do so by putting forward proposals at the AGM, again in line with the Rules and Constitution and the proposals will be voted upon by members at the AGM

I am sorry but something about Swift made me leave the BASC after 25 years as a member of the Gamekeepers Association. Couldn't really put my finger on it for a long while but I was recently proven right. Don't know this man and don't want to from his former actions, just another reason to be glad I'm out. They seem to continually digging a deeper hole, thank goodness for the NGO and CA at least we know they are committed to our sports.

That's fair enough, David. Just wondered if the man himself would care to say anything or not really.
