BASC insurance.

I've had my FAC for a little over a year now. I had insurance with BASC as I was shooting on a perm and also a club.

It's come to renew but before I do I was wondering if there are other companies that are as good as BASC and cheaper?

Thanks.

BASC
BDS
SACS
CA
Etc.

All of them do insurance which is likely to be pretty satisfactory. However, we should belong to an organisation for bigger reasons than that, in my opinion.

You will get different views on which best represents our way of life. I remain with BASC for the time being because they are the biggest, despite their significant failings. However, many understandably disagree with my position on that.

Kind regards,

Carl

I see that BDS is a couple of quid more expensive than BASC. Does anyone know if the cover is the same?

I used to be with BASC but I've now rationalised my finances, have cut out "the middleman" as it were, and send my money directly to John Swift (for his pension) and Richard Ali (for his dismissal compensation) and find it has not at all affected the effectiveness of BASC's results regarding police imposition of GP medical input requirements on the shooting community.

Send it direct to your GP as a deposit for your medical evidence scheme report - you'll then only have the 60 x ££££ monthly installments that will no doubt be introduced thereafter. ;)

With BDS you are covered if you generate any income (up to £5,000 per year, I think) from stalking, for example selling a few carcasses to a game dealer. BASC's standard cover does not allow for this.

Correction VSS: this cover is available from BASC as standard and it is not capped at £5000 per year

Also not sure all the others listed above include £250,000 legal expenses cover

As part of the standard membership package? Is this a recent addition? Certainly didn't seem to be the case when I looked into it, which is why I now have insurance with BDS.

The cover for income related to your shooting activity has been in place for about 10 years, there was a restriction of up to £5000 until about 5 years ago when it was lifted

So, if you're stalking, and selling more than £5k worth of venison per year, or you're taking paying guests, BASC standard membership package will cover all your activities associated with stalking etc? Without any additional premium?

Unfortunately BASC have become the whipping boys for the excesses of politicians and mass media alike. Even now there are people about to vote in a General Election based on party political preferences without bothering to find out which of their constituency candidates are pro or anti shooting, or even have any knowledge on the subject at all.

Just about everybody else. I read a report a year or so ago that reported that the insurance element of all shooting org membership was valued at around £18. The rest goes on running costs of the organisation

All the shooting org insurance policies cover recreational shooting and not commercial activity, but have different views on what is recreational so it's worth double checking with them.
The clause in the BASC policy is that making money from selling all or part of your bag, or being paid for beating or picking up for example is still covered provided the total income from this activity does not make up the majority of your income. Full wording is on the BASC Web site.
However taking out paying guests would fall outside of recreational, and there is an additional policy available from BASC to cover those who run a shooting related business such as professional stalkers, coaches etcetera.

I have in the past used most of them at one time or another however for the last 4 renewals I have stayed with the BDS it certainly fits well with what I do which is a little of all sorts, they have a great local membership and their newsletters etc are focused on my own interests.
