Thinking of starting fly fishing again ....Why not just voluntarily phase out shooting altogether over five years? That will give us time to learn golf during the transition period.

I don't agree. So far as I understand it, the only reason a ban on lead is seen as inevitable is that the EU wants to ban it. So far the majority of member states do not support that view. Supposing a ban is forthcoming from the EU, we then have no reason to assume that such a ban would carry any legal weight in the UK, unless it is drafted, debated and implemented all in the next 10 months. That's possible but unlikely. Should such a ban come to pass, then the shooting organisations' plan will be over-ridden anyway and we will have no more time than we would done anyway. Any ban would always have been wrapped up in wider restrictions on other chemicals (like the REACH directive), and the idea that we'll escape government regulation because of this half-witted plan is ludicrous. It just signals to Government that they can crack on and ban what they like and that they will be applauded for doing it. It's exactly the same as burning your house down to avoid damage by lightning.
On the other hand, there is/was a significant probability that no ban would have come this year. This issue has been reviewed by government recently and the conclusion was, yet again, that there is not adequate scientific evidence to support a ban.
Outside the shooting organisations, there has been so far NO welcome for this from conservationists, from Government, or from anyone else. It has had zero positive PR effect, and zero political effect. The only positive reaction has been from one crusty Tory MP.

I think we could attach laser designators to the chests of these pheasants, like they had way back on Chieftan tanks for training exercises, issues the guns with blanks (paper cases of course) and each "kill" they got recorded onto a handheld device held by their loader. That way no lead, no dead pheasants, and everything is fine. Except it's all a load of cobblers. But don't blame me for that...it was BASC (et al) started it...
Imagine the campaign against stocked fisheries tooSport fishing is fooked. Dragging a fish out and drowning it in oxygen so you can get a mugshot of you gurning or kissing it? A hobby for tossers.
[by the way, I fish, but beat them to death then eat them]

Yes indeed writing is on the wall I’m afraidThat wont last long once hunting's banned.
There are already small, organised groups of anti fishing nutters out there & like LACS, they're not averse to using violence & intimidation against anglers - usually old or young ones of course.
was called simfire (simulated fire) with a red smoke pot on the top and if hit you where locked out the battle for 30 to 1 hour. the not so good old days.
why not just fly drones (mats A aircraft) that look like birds and we can keep shooting until the cows comes home.
bob.
I reckon casseroled drone won't be a patch on pheasant.
Oh & if the nutters have their way, the cows will soon be gone too...
WOW: I got slatted on this thread for saying: we as a commercial shoot offer normal meat as well as our game from the estate for the clients lunch : don't tell me the cows are coming home for the last time too ?
bob.
Yep. It'll be roast drone or tofuburger for lunch.
and then plastic cheese and cardboard crackers on the cheese boards
bob.
Here we go again EU this EU that. You're out now. it's nothing to do with them.
If you think that the UK will escape a ban on lead ammunition because you are not part of the EU then you are being naive. It will happen. Maybe not this year or maybe not in the next 5 years but it will happen.
So given that it's almost inevitable why not start the ball rolling and look at alternatives and get the cartridge suppliers on board with developing and improving what is out there.
As you point out escaping legislation is ludicrous and it is not what I said. I said it would maybe keep the government satisfied for a period and perhaps delay any legislation.
Your analogy of burning your house down just doesn't make any sense. I would see it more like installing a lightning conductor to save the house perhaps.
I grew up shooting lead and I will confess that when I moved here to DK I was worried about the use of non-lead ammunition but it just doesn't even come to mind any more. You should see all the old side by sides that people are using without even giving it a thought. Its just not a problem.
Have been doing some searching and came across this site. It appears the ECHA wants to try and ban lead shot and bullets not just for game and deer shooting but also for range use as well, are targets going to get in the food chain.

Is a complete ban on lead shot ammunition for hunters and shooters being threatened through the back door in Europe?
Threat of lead ban by so-called buffer zones ** Ban on lead shot ammunition for hunters and shooters debate** Statement by RUAG Ammotec** Facts and figureswww.all4shooters.com
They will if you read the ECHA report that was released in Europe a couple of weeks ago.I was half expecting to hear they're pushing it to clay shooting too
