I've also done the online BDS course recently and agree with @LewisL
Do it in person if you can, it's definitely doable to do the online course with some help of the question banks etc, however, you'll definitely get a better understanding when things are explained "logically" and not just facts after facts after facts. Unfortunately I was not able to spare the full 3-4 days on the courses that were running and choose to do the online course.
The one thing the online course really needs to improve on is the Deer Recognition part. It doesn't explain at all why a certain deer is that species, it only says whether you are right and wrong, so quite hard to learn from the mistakes you make during the online course. Fortunately on my assessment day, we had a quick recap of it, and it makes such a big difference, when someone explains to you why you were right or wrong.
