What’s the best fox caller out there for solo lamping please? I know icotec are going to be highly recommended but I’m thinking about manoeuvrability. I walk my shoot from my house. Any recommendations?

Time of year makes a big difference....I have had cub/half grown bolt on a winter call that adults will steam in on.

I use a home made Tenner field ( brass) come the cold weather, widgeon whistle is easy the mouse calls are good...
each dead fox wont come again...

Sorry I meant to say electronic. I have several fox callers but was looking for something I could set out into the middle of a field and stand down wind from it.
I’m finding with a couple of the foxes I’m hunting, they will hear my call and then track down wind which essentially spooks them.

Cheapest is a Bluetooth speaker and free downloaded calls. VarminAl website has some. And others can be found without too much trouble.
I actually made the caller described on his page with an old tannoy speaker and a roll of speaker cable. Then you get into the Chinese copy’s of the Fox pro type. Works ok with reasonable range but I found it ate batteries for fun. Modified an 18650 battery holder to solve the problem. Light enough to carry and fits (just) in my Snugpak grab bag thing.
I would add a line pin/stick and hang a rabbit guts open up over the caller. Give it a dinner smell to pick up.

I always shoot alone and on foot over a couple of thousand acres. I usually usede mouth calls but I have a FoxPro Wildfire that I take occasionally. It’s not heavy just a little bulky and not waterproof. If you don’t Ming having a small back pack or large bumbag it’s not a problem. Caller works well with good results but if I have 1 criticism, it’s the range which is only up to 100m. 100m sounds a lot but it’s a lot less when the air is damp or there’s vegetation in the way. I’ve not used an iCotec caller but I understand their range is in hundreds of m.

I’ve often wondered about making my own compact unit with an old phone and speaker As the mp3 calls are readily available. Perhaps one day I’ll get round to it.

You don’t always want the caller upwind of you, I always place the caller in a position that distracts the fox from my position. There are times when a fox will walk right past me as all it’s senses are focussed on the sound coming from the caller some distanceaway.

I have a fox pro spitfire, actually, I have 2. I like it because in doesn’t have 20 million calls, the font is large enough to read, well it used to be, my eyes are getting worse now. it doesn’t look like an 80s ghetto blaster so you can actually carry it with you And it does a decent range.
i think the shape could be improved to be more ergonomic for carrying. So to get the best out of it you need to have a decent way of carrying just so you can get your hand on it easily and put it out without having to take a bag off your back. And going off topic even more i find a piece of string tied to it so it can be tied up in the air, to a tree, fence, keeps it out of the damp grass and lets the sound travel further. I can also see the red light so i know where it is.

I have a FoxPro spitfire and agree with above about a piece of string to hang it from a branch or similar. It just fits in my jacket pocket for when I'm walking which is handy. I also carry a couple of mouth calls and try hand squeaks too just for variety.
I've found though that this year more foxes are simply ignoring calls than I've ever known in over 40 years of foxing, countless times I've watched them just give an occasional glance towards the call then carry on what they were doing. But knowing foxes, next time out they could be streaming in!

I use a little ICOtec GC101 that I got from BestFoxCall (Doesn't look like they sell them anymore). It's small enough to fit in a jacket pocket and is loud enough to heard from 2 or 3 fields away. The 'Mouse' call has been my most successful option with it. So much so that I've actually had foxes steam in and try to get the caller off the fence post I'd put it on !
Being a fold-out design it's also easy to hang it over a strand of barbed wire atop a fence or a thin branch.

For electronics I use x2 fox pro callers fusion and the smaller but older scorpion, but have also got x2 Mini Colibri fox callers which easily fit in the pocket but are only limited with 10 calls, but are same sounds as foxpro, mark at MMsporting sells them.

I carry enough gear as it is.dont think I could cope with any more too carry.just me

I feel for/with you THERE 'steve curry'!! Was I ever glad when a couple of years back I invested in one of those new fangled Lithium Ion batteries!! They are about the same/similar size to the old style motorbike lead acid batteries I use(d) to power my NightForce RSM 170mm scope mounted, traditional style lamp but probably 1/3rd or less the weight for the same energy storage - present one is a 10 ampere hour unit and has served me well. Can't praise it enough to be honest and just fits snugly into the side jacket pocket of my camo jacket.

I had to wear a separate, strong waist belt and purpose built leather container attached to said when I carried the old style lead acid battery in my earlier lamping days, and it was a bit of a pest AND heavy enough to tire me some after a couple of hours wandering about on my lonesome in the dark on local farmland. Ha!!

As for the calling in of foxes, back of the hand and/or just sucking in over pursed lips seems to have worked fine over the years. Have one of those round steel whistles with a central hole, and a purpose built plastic reed thingy that squeaks really loud when I do my huff and puff behind it, but have to say in the last couple of years I have been sorely tempted to buy a Fox-Pro or equivalent, as long as the bulk and weight are not debilitating for this old boy...... Might yet have one about my person before this year is out methinks, Chrisy being an ideal opporchancity to ask something of the Missus that I might ACTUALLY have a chance of receiving???... Hahahahahahahaaaaa!!!

ATB ....... and shoot safely

I carry my shooting sticks.my rifle.and spotter that's it.mouth calls are all I use.but I can see how the electrical caller in an ambush situation can be handy.and as for presents at Christmas. I've been married for 28 years and she still says dont know what too get you for chrimbo.bless her

It pays to tie your caller from a tree if posible to keep it out of the mud, to help the sound to travel further, and to prevent you from putting a bullet in it by mistake !!!!!....
