Bigger than 243 but a bit different?

Its an interesting calibre the 257 Roberts but I dont see what gains it would offer over a standard 25-06
In hind sight, instead of my 25-06 I would have bought a .260

The 257 Roberts does not have any gains over the 25-06 but is a more unusual cartridge like the Op asked for.

May I suggest you have a read through Ballistic Studies Cartridge Knowledge Base? http://www.ballisticstudies.com/Knowledge+Base.html

There are articles on different bullet performances in a huge range of calibres, apparently based on decades of research. I am inclined to trust their conclusions purely because they mirror my experiences in the real world. I have found the linking of different bullet/cartridge combinations to their optimum bodyweights very handy. These are not generated through any dubious formula, but through experience and experimentation. Highly recommended.

Something different

. . . I really fancy something a bit different.

Trouble is, I don't know what!! 6.5x47, 260 etc are all just a bit similar ballistically to the 243 to really make it worthwhile running a second calibre. I'm not going to be firing thousands of rounds, so something a bit "hot" doesn't worry me and if I want something that shoots a bigger bullet as flat as my 243 then it's going to need to be quick...[/QUOTE]

From what you've said 260/6.5 is out which I can understand if you are keeping your 243. I have a 243 but since re-barreling my 308 to 7mm-08 I never use it anymore.

I shoot Muntjac, Roe but predominantly Fallow and Red and the 7mm-08 is superb, it's soft shooting and packs a punch using 140g bullets. If I want something flatter I use 120g bullets and at about an inch high at 100 yards it's an inch low at 200 yards and 8 inches low at 300 yards. You can also use 150g bullets that work very well.

Also if it's important to you the 7mm-08 does not give the meat damage of calibers like 270 and 30-06 which I've stopped my team from using if they don't download (so what's the point of them really?).

Anyway my good old 243 is being sold and I think I'm replacing it with a 6.5x55. As I re-load it can be loaded hotter than factory ammo which gives it much better ballistics.

Confused? I am!

calibre debates,,,you gotta love em...I think if I had to pick ONE rifle for the UK (excluding boar), I'd go with a nice pillar and glass bedded wooden stock (walnut, zebra wood, etc) in .257 Roberts AI with a decent original FN action or similar quality build and either a timney or jewel trigger, nice rust blue, pachmeyer recoil pad, and a zeiss scope

.
my present rifles are a 6.5x55 and a 30.06. both are excellent rifles.Meat damage imo is mostly down to bullet type/choice. My preference is for soft points. If I were to change rifles again my selection list would be a 7x64 or a 280 Remington.

fair point, I do respect your personal choice and opinion...esp. since you're from Valhalla after all!......very few of us around you know - LOL.

Why not chose a rifle you really like and then chose caliber? One that fits you well and has qualities you like...

This is what I did. Wanted a rifle that would fire 140grn and was suited to me. Found a lovely rifle and got a variation for that cal
