Blaser K95 with moderator

I have always wanted to purchase a Blaser K95 due the light weight and simplicity of the rifle. My stalking buddies think the K95 is not practical and expensive and it would be hard to sell if I did not get on with the K95. However, I still have my heart set on one and have nearly made the decision to order one. My one concern is how this rifle would handle with a moderator fitted. Although it would be a relatively light weight mod I am worried it would upset the handling of this rifle more than standard bolt actions as the rifle is so light. If I order one I am going to fit the butt stock magazine which holds 4 rounds and may help to balance the rig. Thinking .308.

Any comments welcomed

Lawrence or hardy are the shortest / lightest / over barrel

cmm4 lighter still but sticks out further due to being an muzzle can

A moderator on a kipplauf? Sacrilege!
Agreed! What's the point of buying a lightweight, short and handy, accurate rifle with beautiful lines, and messing with it by adding a bulging weight to the end of it?

Talk to some K95 and Merkel K1 owners about why they love their single shot rifles. Save the moderator for a Tikka or something.

Here's one - Heym 44b - IMHO sticking a lump out front defeats the object of having one. Reasons as above.

Sacrilege, but if you have to go for a small titanium one. If you get a 26" barrel, they are still short and light comparded to a bolt, but a lot of noise goes away. And a break action should have a rimmed cartridge - so get a 7x65R. Reason being is that rimmless cartridges have a little clip on the extractor to raise the cartridge and you have to pull it out. With a rimmed cartridge, just open, and twist your wrist sideways to raise the barrels and empty falls out and next one goes in.

Dont concern yourself about it beig a single shot and not be able to get off a quick second shot - you can quite easily.

And those with ungainly plastic stocked, stainless and big moderators with a telescope that wouldn't look out of place at the national observatory will never understand. Nor will those who buy other products made by the same company.

Doesn't Steve Bowers offer a moderator that is cut to the same diameter as the barrel so as to be invisible? That might work out ok if you choose a K95 with the shorter barrel option (just speculating). Otherwise I don't think I would put a moderator on at all.

+1 ditto on the 7x65R:
Rimmed for extraction.
Tapered case extracts easily.
Lots of really great deer and big game bullets to hand load, from 120-gr to 175-gr.
Lots of data for its parent case, the 7x64, so you can just use the starting loads.
It is more powerful than a 7x57 or 7mm-08, but can be downloaded to 7x57R.

A 120grain bullet would not kick you hard. Even in the light wieght K95. If you found recoil to be a problem put a brake on the end.
Those K95 are somthing else. Nice light rifle. Very "pointable". I would not consider a mod for it but if you did get a sl5.
If you can find one that has a mod on and see if YOU think it puts the balence out.
I would save the money and get some ear plugs instead.

Very nice rifle the K95.

Or get it in one of the known soft recoiling chamberings - 7x57 or 7x57R might not be in fashion nowadays but they are the perfect accompaniment to a lightweight single shot rifle.

Don't discount the other manufacturers of kipplaufs either, Blaser wouldn't be my first choice of mainstream makers.

Yuk! what an abismal idea - a K95 with a mod. Just terrible!

On the face of it, a butt stock magazine is a good idea...in practice it's not so great. I have one and 11 years of experience tells me a 'kickstop' is a much better plan..both for balance and to help with larger calibre cartridges when you acquire different barrels.

Buy the K95, forget the mod. ATB

Well, you might always consider having two barrels....one with mod and one without (when you want it to look decent and balance right....;)). I've had a Merkel K1 in 7x65R for several years and just love it - lightweight, accurate, nice to handle, shoot and look at. You should definitely consider a rimmed cartridge for a K95 or K1 - the construction of the strong kipplauf-lock make rimless cartridges much harder to extract - with a tapered rimmed cartridge you just break the gun and let the case fall out by itself . 7x57 R and 7x65R are both very suitable, but 8x57 IRS is also fine with a smooth recoil. Mounting a moderator on the barrel wouldn't be my choice (I use active ear protectors), but I've actually read about someone who put a barrel weight on a K95 due to a personal choice of balance - it looked awful.

You have made a great choice in stalking rifles. I have a stutzen in 30-06. I would not worry about using a rimless cartridge. Extraction is fine and you'll learn to reload fast enough if you need to. If you get a shorter barrel it may balance better with the moderator. Mine has a Z6i 1.7-10x42SR and I think this is a good match.

My only recommendation is not to go bigger than 30-06 as the recoil will be excessive. 7x65R, 7x57R and 308W would be my other choices. Cartridges in the stock would be nice. I carry two in my blaser sling. That generally sees me right for a fast follow up shot.

I need a light rifle as the arthritis sets in and the K95 has been perfect. I wouldn't give a toss about what your mates think as the K95 not being practical, far from it. Its light, takes down like a shotgun, has a silent decocking safety, points very well and uses the same blaser QD mounting system. More importantly its very accurate. As a deer stalkers rifle I haven't tried much better, with the weight and handling being the biggest factor.

Another good thing about the 308Win is to make up some nice subsonic loads with trail boss for close work where you may have considered a moderator. Smiths over here will easily put on a thread and cap if you need it. Its always nice to have that option.

You wont regret buying a K95 and as for resale you try finding or buying a s/h one.

I'm a big fan of moderators but put one on my K95 ??? no chance in would be criminal.

Mines in 6.5x57r very very accurate and very low recoil. I bought it as a bit of a toy but I go to the cabinet thinking "I'll take my r93 30-06 on the Fallow today" when I walk away I'm carrying the K95 with a big smile on my face. As for your mates they will be green with envy.

ps I had a 44b hated it. One bit of sense though if your stalking is for pleasure enjoying the stalk and taking a deer or two you wont find anything much nicer to carry, if you spend your time trying to take six Fallow out of a bunch every weekend then its not the tool for that, unless you have exceptionally quick fingers.
