For UK hunting, N/V, or thermal sight. Thermal spotter makes life much easier if budget allows.

Pard 008 excellent value for money, and can be used day, or night.

There are umpteen different opinions about calibre, but if you're shooting over a feed station, and are confident to head shoot, and rifle throwing 130gn + will do the job, and prevent runners, and having to look for them.

If you're going to body shoot, it should also do, with good shot placement, although personally, I'd favour something in the 150-180gn range.

For a mobile hoist, check out Donnington Deer Management. Google/Youtube for gralloching, any decent stalking knife will work.

Hi Lateral
I’ve shot a few boar from a high seat ( 12 to be exact I think from memory) using my .308 with a heavy 158 grn SP round with AIMPoint, S&B zenith under the moon and NV they have all worked ok static and have 6.5 x 55 that shoots heavy loads

next year I’m going to try my hand at driven boar, for some reason I couldn’t get on all that well with AIMPoint, the Zenith 2.5 -10 was grand but it seems slower on the moving uptake, I’ve shot simulated running boar and done ok

my thread really is to get recommendations of kit, I would like to get something in between the AIMPoint and schmidt scope wise, knife wise if I’m honest my little AW and the Emberleaf seemed a wee bit small for one boar I grassed last year but still done a very good job, I was thinking of getting a garron by Emberleaf, as it’s a longer blade, but it’s/ will be a small use knife compared to my other ones and a lot of dollar, thinking of a reasonable cost blade that will do the job ( if really needed)

Thanks for your input. Appreciated

As usual, it's all about budget, what you can afford V what you can justify, depending on how often you might go driven boar shooting.

With driven, you can be shooting from a few feet, out to well over 100m, on my last trip, somewhere out towards 200m. I tried the Aim Point Micro H2, and hated it, particularly on the Blaser, where it sits so far forward. I've used a Z6i 1-6x24 for years, and it's excellent, with a massive FOV. I've been having a bit of a play, switching from a Merkel Helix, to a Blaser, which for some reason puts less stress on an injured wrist. It's not as fast as the Helix, but still damn fast, but I did find the standard Professional stock, far better for me, than the Success.

So the Z6i won't work for me on the Blaser (can't get eye relief) so I tried a Z8i 1.7-13x42. I love this scope, but even this, is seriously hard work if shooting just a few meters, unless you can see, or hear something, and shoot gun up.

A friend let me try his Aimpoint H34L, looks a like a short scope. Massive improvement for me, over the Micro, and finding one cheap second hand, I now use that if I'm on a really tight peg, taking seconds to swap between sights. I'd like one of the .75-8, or 1-8 Z8's, but can't bring myself to throw another £2k at the moment.

Like most things, it really takes a little time to work out what works for you best, which isn't easy if it's something you are likely to do once, maybe twice a year.

Keep an eye out for people going to the H&H shooting cinema, and maybe try and get down, to see a mix of options.

If you're intending to do the "Coup De Grace", I'd be looking at a FAR cheaper knife. Boar knives tend to be long, pointy, with a very safe guard to protect your hand when stabbing.

Hi Lateral
I didn’t get on with AIMPoint for the self same reason, I did see in William Evans a mid length low (illuminated )mag scope I took a shine to, may just have another look at that again, calibre wise .308 R8 success pro or R93 in wood either one of those I can use, it was the eye relief with me on the R8 SP and the Aimpoint, just didn’t feel right I’m looking around for something suitable, it’s the scope I need to get 100%
knife wise I’m looking

My 308 on the R8 is 22mm barrel and weighty, The R93 is superbly light but doesn’t like recoil enough to enjoy multi shots
for now I’m looking for the suitable scope :) Dunno on the rifle yet

I wrote some take-aways from my driven season last year and you can see that most serious calibres (7mm and up) seem to work on the shoot I am involved in. We have around 30 guns all-in (20+ shooting each day), and I sometimes wonder if any two guns are using the same calibres....

As for scopes for driven shooting, I am not a fan, and shoot iron sights and a double rifle. But if you don't find an Aimpoint works for you, I would thoroughly recommend an Eotech holographic sight: they sit farther back on the rail and have a wider field of view. But you have to remember to shoot with both eyes open: practise by shooting clays: its far cheaper than a running boar or cinema range!

I've recently bought a S&B Exos 1-8x24 scope for my double rifle. The magnification can be turned down to CC mode, then the scope can be used as a aimpoint sight. I shot a red hind at 100 mtrs with it set on 4x with no problem and running boar with it set on CC. I have a Aimpoint 9000L for my Mauser M03 and a Meopta R1 1-4x22 with its K- Dot reticle. The Meopta is a great scope for the money and the Meopta R2 looks like a nice scope as well.
Finishing off a boar with a knife is best left to others. Thats the good thing with driven hunts, others do the dirty work.

You won't need a big knife unless you plan on following up with the likes of us tracking, even then the handler will only want to do this so the dog doesn't get harmed or yourself, but if you do want I would seriously ask if you can tag along it is far more exciting than sat on a stand you will get to see both sides of how it's done, I will say if you do you will want to do it more and more, regards and good luck, wayne

Cheers Wayne
Yep that sounds just right, still aways to go yet, but next year is the year :tiphat: can't wait to get the ball rolling

Phil Ive just come back from Croatia. You already have the kit you need for deerstalking. If you cant use the aim point then look at a Swarovski or Zeiss with 1x base mag mine packed up and I had to use the guides 2.5 mag scope which I found far too much for close range boar that we were shooting at. If you really want to spend some money buy a 9.3x62 barrel with open sights

I don't even take a normal hunting Knife with me when on a driven day. When I've payed for a driven day I want to be stood on a stand not out in the beating line. It would be a lot cheaper to find somewhere you can join the dog handlers and spend a couple of days without the cost. A day that you have paid for is not that time. On most driven hunts i suspect few boar are stuck during the day. Monteria's maybe the exception.
All the paying guns who carry a huge knife that will never see any use on the day, I recon give the beaters a good laugh and they just think another poser.
