Bore Snakes.

I have had a few Boresnakes and use it all the time. I love the product, they are sometimes hard to pull through but if you keep it straight they do come through. i have never had any trouble with the cord snapping??

I have seen this subject before here. If you stick a bore snake you have used the wrong size. Find someone who has actually broken off a Bore Snake (Hoppes) in the bore and have them post. I doubt if it has happened using the correct caliber. I remember when the originator of the Bore Snake used to go hawking them at gun shows... before he was bought out. I have some that are 15 years old that still work fine.~Muir
I'm with you Muir. I have used them for 5 yrs and never had to replace them. Hoppes are certainly well made. I find the first pull through is always more stiff than the 2nd and 3rd. Good bit of kit, but always pull straight up and out.

Ive used bore snakes for a number of years with no issues, i would say though buy the original not cheap imitations. Also to back up other posts always get the right calibre snake for the job, one certainly does not fit all!!

Ive had a hopps .243 pull through cord pull free, luckily I was able to pull the thing out.
I managed to repair the pull through by stitching the cord back using 80lb braid then trimming the top (after whipping it with the braid) to an inverted V. Works better now than it ever did.

Ive used Hoppes Boresnakes for years and never had a problem.

Sure check for freying cord before you use it. If in doubt don't!

There was a comment about replacing a barrel if it snaps which sounds like an urban myth. An appropriately sized bronze rod and a mallet would sort you out. Both are softer than the barrel so should clear fine.

Just thought to mention. I have a new .17HMR and a so a new .17 boresnake too. First use it was as tight as a nats, I had to wrap it round the moderator as a handle to drag it through. Its been through 3 or 4 times now and its eased up no end.

worst things ever invented. know a guy who broke his in his .222 and couldnt get it out and ended having too burn it out with a heated peice of fence wire. bloody joke. and i had on which turn the bushing in my chamber which bolt locks into in my steyr and wouldnt let the bolt go back in. cost me £150 to ge it fixed with taken the barrel off and everything. not good things at all, better off with the old fashioned way.

I have used a pull through on my 30-06 since I brought it from the previous owner. He had also used a pull through on the rifle when he got it from new. I have never had a problem with mine ever!

agreed m8 i don't know any one who has broke one:(
ive just bought a ottis kit and would not be without it for proper cleaning, but use a bore snake in the field as .17's can gum up quickly.
i have tried three different rod cleaning kits and not one has worked properly in a .17,the patches either wont go in or fall of halfway in:doh:

I've never had problem with them in 17hmr, .243, 6.5x55 and 12G. I even bought one in .223 for my service rifle.

Tipton spear jag for .17, Tipton Carbon rod, & genuine .17 Pro-shot patches, end of problems., I also clean all other calibres except 45/70 with multiples of .17 patches on the correct jags, works great. Steve.

Many decades ago I used to look after about 50 .303's in our school cadets armoury. I think in all cases the crowns had big grooves in them from squaddies cleaning them with pull throughs. No wonder they wouldn't shoot. I only use a bore snake on my .22lr, v sparingly and try to pull it straight out.

Conversly i remember seeing a candidate at my DSC level 1 cleaning his rifle after the shoot. When asked why he said he always cleaned his rifle after shooting it to preserve the barrel, problem was he wasn't using a bore guide!!!

I overheard a chap in a gunsmith who did not get a boresnake stuck, but did wear the crown into a nice shape by not pulling the boresnake plumb and square. This was rectified by having to cut about a half inch off the barrel then re-cut a thread for the moderater.

I've used a 12b bore snake for a few years now. I think may have cleaned it twice i just put some oil down the barrel and pull it though. my barrels like glass and the snake has never got stuck.

All sounds like a lot of tom tit to me. Has any-one heard of a "pull-through" . That is all a bore snake is. Worked OK for countless "Tommy Atkins" with Lee Enfields. If you are that worried loop a wire round the end and reverse pull (in the unlikely event of it getting stuck. Before anyone asks, yes it will work). Certainly better that the burning meths idea (which wont work as the burning meths will loose its oxygen supply quick sharp.

It is what it is. Its not for removing copper or heavy leading, but ideal in the small hours for a quick run through prior to a proper clean with rods the next day.
