Bore Snakes.

I am with labrat on this i have one and if it got stuck the back would still be in fesh air or the front no problems getting it out ps my barrel is 22 inh and there is 4 inch at least to spare/ I just give mine a wee pull through after a stalk to dry the internals of my rifle seconds.

To reduce the chance of getting the boresnake stuck Keep it moving quickly and pull through in one continuous motion.

The best way to do this to point the muzzle down, squirt into the breech end whatever solvent you wish, drop the
weighted end of the cord down the barrel and take up the slack to enter the snake into the breech.

Now place the gun, pointing up, on one side of the room door, loop the cord over the door and grip it firmly.

Pull down on the gun and in one continuous move pull the snake fully through. If you are out and about use a tree branch !

Hmm...
I'm with the 'must have used the wrong calibre' and 'don't buy cheap goods' team. Have used bore snakes for years in shotguns and rifles, true they can stick a bit, but get stuck? Not really.

Using other objects with edges as levers is almost certainly going to end up, in time (quick or slow) with frayed weakened cords, which of course will have you paying into the swear box when it (predictably) snaps in the field somewhere and the days shooting is lost....
Don't think a bore snake replaces the need for a thorough clean with rods and kind brushes though at the end of a day; and of course solvents and oils can weaken the cords...

I have seen this subject before here. If you stick a bore snake you have used the wrong size. Find someone who has actually broken off a Bore Snake (Hoppes) in the bore and have them post. I doubt if it has happened using the correct caliber. I remember when the originator of the Bore Snake used to go hawking them at gun shows... before he was bought out. I have some that are 15 years old that still work fine.~Muir

I have a 8mm Bore Snake that i use in the .308 . The bore snake go's through the barrel without to much effort and i did pull it out backwards with out to much of a struggle, just to see if i could.

I have also used boresnakes for many years with no problems but it was pointed out to me at Bisley that I should be very careful to pull them straight in line with the barrel as pulling at an angle can cause crown damage and a resulting loss in accuracy over time.

I was of the opinion that the chord and main cleaning part was of a length that if it snapped there would be a bit still sticking out to pull it out? As for renewing a barrell, baws!!

I have also heard this, but i don't understand how the soft boresnake material wears away metal? The only thing i could think is if you constantly use a boresnake on very dirty barrels the crud that sticks to the snake could be abrasive?

If it got stuck could you chamber a round and pull the trigger to force it out?
hello,if it got stuck......well since bore snakes have came on the go,i have had experience of two getting stuck in the barrel,i use them myself and touch wood have never had a prob but i have heard of other people getting them stuck.luckily i was not handling the rifle when these bore snakes got stuck, gladly it was there owners,i watched them in there fury as there rifle brought in to the country to shoot stags is now broken.....both rifles were left for the head man to look at and eventually i removed the blockage,it needs to come out the way it went in no matter how much force it wont go forward,pm me if you need my experiences, cheers.

As an Armourer with 20 years experience I have had barrels brought to me with everything but the kitchen sink stuck up them. Never failed to clear a barrel. There are ways and means and some times it takes BFI some times it just takes time and perseverance. Yes you can get cord wear with any pull through the key is if using a pull through pull directly in line with the access of the bore this is also a good tip if it looks like a pull through is starting to stick. Wind the cord you do have round a hammer shaft secure the rifle/barrel and pull straight and smooth and you stand the highest chance of getting the obstruction out without snapping the cord.

I loved it too until! the dame thing knoted and like a fool I pulled really hard and jammed it in rifle,
to free it I used a 6 inch screw and a hand held screw driver and carefully I managed to get the screw embedded in the cord and was able to free it,

Riflesmith i use says he gets plenty of work from people using bore snakes on rifles, they scratch the crown ! i do use one on my shotguns ( when i can find where i left the damd thing)
