Looking for a new foxing caliber, have tikka 223 that is great but boring to use and heavy to lug about. Looking for something slightly lighter.
Sadly since no reloading in the South of Ireland it will have to be something I can scrounge factory ammo for.
17rem looks fun and local rfd has some ammo in stock.
90% of my shooting is 250feet or less.
Happy to hear any and all suggestions ty.

Been using 22.250 for foxes for years with good results. Not sure that my FEO would consider ‘because it’s boring’ as ‘good reason’ for variation though!🤣

Firearms officer in my station is dead sound, won't be an issue changing over to something else, be a straight substitution for me.

Any 22 hornet factory ammo you would recommend as reloading not an option sadly.

I would change the rifle, but don’t change the cartridge. 223 is a versatile and cheap to run little cartridge and given in ROI you are restricted to factory ammo, it gives you by far the largest choice.

Moving to 22-250, 22 Creedmoor etc means a bigger case, more powder and double the cost of ammo.

22 Hornet - very versatile little cartridge, but again ammo costs and not the range of the 223.

Don't go for a .22 Hornet, you will be disappointed and wish you had kept your .223rem. You will feel undergunned. Winchester 45 grain SP factory shoots ok in mine.

Go .22-250 and be done with it. Although if I change from .223 (which I can't see me ever doing), I'd go .243win.

Edit; ^^^^ .220 Swift is Cool.. my brother has a Ruger varmint which I sometimes shoot, but it's handloads all day long, not much factory ammo.

Bored, and most shots less than 250' :-| A nice trim lever in 357Mag maybe?
