Boring target time.

I got shot of the Ruger 1022, to inconsistent. Tried everything, don't want to talk about it, involves money!
Anyway moving forward I got a beat up Remington 572. Did some work on the wood. Fettled the trigger and made a piece for the fore end that keeps it all snug.
So far it's shot over 50 rats and a bag full of squirrels.

Anyway, today was my first chance to test some ammo.

Boring target #1 is old Winchester subs verses new. Old good but new are still pants. And the old ones shot from this beat the Ruger hands down!

Next up Norma subs verses RWS subs.
Equally good.

Next was mini mags from CCI and Remington hvhp.
Mini's were very good but Remington are pants.
The only issue is the complete zero shift up and right. I don't mind up but a 22 that shoots right or left switching from HV to subs is a pain 😔.
Oh well.

There is an issue with a miss fire now and then but after a good cleaning it has drastically reduced so I may not need to do firing pin work after all.
I also shot some shorts and longs at rats and they were good.

The rifle is long and that translates to aiming beautifully off hand, it just sits there and the , guessing, 2lb trigger breaks without pulling off the shot at all.
On the whole, it's just more me 😊.

OK, so the rifle may not be of the type that is inherently accurate but those groups demonstrate the challenges for most 22lr owners. Namely finding a brand & type of hunting ammo that delivers something acceptable in terms of group size and without infuriating ‘flyers’.

I couldn’t bring myself to head to the woods with a rifle & ammo that will only shoot circa 1” groups at 50 yards on a good day.

Stay in then, it ain't so negative my way 😘IMG_20231216_163528.webp
You'll have to show us your groups shot under field conditions. Should be interesting.

Apologies. I should have fully read the post. Thought you too were bemoaning the dire state of 22lr hunting ammo. If you shot those groups off hand unsupported then clearly that complicates the proposition.

That said it’s good see the critters you take aim at seem unconcerned!

Shot them off a post.
Don't be shy now 😃

So yesterday I forgot to test some fiocchi subs in the eley plastic box's!
Utter useless in this rifle and misfires all the time!
I've done the firing pin today.
Polished the slot to encourage a thou or two mor travel. Removed burrs and gunk.
Also polished the cam that cocks the hammer.
Much slicker.

Anyway had a jolly good pink using HV ammo and it behaved perfectly. Then I settled down and tested the fiocchi subs 3" group at 50yds over 10 rounds..three failed to fire until reloaded!
Anyway, how can you not like HV 22's....IMG_20231217_104718.webp

Regarding HV’s, I think we’re in a minority. As you know, I’m with you on that.😉👍
