No, I'm talking about the hot drink using beef consommé for shoot days

Anyone have any good recipes?

I've seen one from the Ripley Castle shoot and Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, but wondered what other recipes people were using.

Spotted this cheating one in The Field quite a while back and haven't bothered to try as I'm not usually organised enough on shoot mornings

When it comes to a Bullshot, I defer to my mate Mark Slim, who makes the best I know. He serves it at elevenses after a couple of drives and it goes down a storm. Heat a saucepan of tinned bouillon (add game stock if you have some) and bung in some Lea & Perrins, tabasco and lemon juice. Pour into a thermos, adding a healthy shot of vodka, and serve with thick, juicy sausages and English mustard.

Thanks - that's exactly what we're planning to do, serve it alongside sausages.

I've read some recipes that suggest Vodka (like a warm Bloody Mary) and others that suggest Sherry.

Maybe I'll have to make and sample both, just in the name of research obviously!

On xmas day in the army when on active service we got woke up with a cup of gunfire... much pref that lol

Roast the beef bones - rib, plus leg etc. Make a stock - bones, carrot celery onion, cut the bones small, core with water, skim of scum as it comes to rolling boil. Gently simmer, lid off 4 hrs or so. Strain through sieve/muslin. When cool whisk in egg white (removes more particles). Reduce to desired consistency, season, glug of brandy.

However you make consomme of any description they are something from the 18th and 19th centuries and taste disgusting. I will happily take a sloe gin, or dram alongside a decent cup of coffee for elevenses. If consome is being served, well I will help that picker up find that particular bird I shot - and will continue to help until all the consome has been consumed.

Only one thing worse than Consome is consome that has had gelatine added to it and then poured over plenty of perfectly good food and allowed to cool thus creating aspic and jellied pies, etc

tabasco (go steady!)
Worcester Sauce
Lemon juice
Oregano
Good Tomato juice

Fill one empty tin with vodka and add to consommé
add a little Tabasco
add half a teaspoon of fresh ground black pepper.
bring to boil then simmer for 5 mins.
Either pour into flasks via a piece of muslin cloth to remove the pepper or leave the pepper in and watch the face of the last couple of people to get the bottom of the flask

I think I'll make this tomorrow or Sunday then drink it while watching quirky British comedy "Bullshot". He was a crack shot on the pigeons, if memory serves.

Thats been served on the shoots here for the last 20 years, along with the sausages mid morning.

One thing we do here with the sausages to add something special to them is once they are cooked and still hot drop them in a food thermos and add liberal amounts of wholegrain mustard and honey to the flask and give it a gentle shake to spread over all the sausages. Absolutely delicious and they will be gone in seconds.....

A technical question: If you are sponsoring a drive, or have a club, what does your insurance carrier say about the consumption of alcohol during shooting activities? Or do you carry insurance? Our club recently went through this but the discussion was rendered moot because of the location of the range within the boundaries of an indian reservation. ~Muir

I've never thought it a good idea to mix guns and alcohol, don't get me wrong I love both, but on my days I want to see how well you shoot, when the seasons over well sit down with a nice meal,and have a few, while reminiscing and see who needs carrying to the taxi for the ride home.

I've never thought it a good idea to mix guns and alcohol, don't get me wrong I love both, but on my days I want to see how well you shoot, when the seasons over well sit down with a nice meal,and have a few, while reminiscing and see who needs carrying to the taxi for the ride home.

In my State, it it illegal to consume or posess alcohol while hunting. I believe our club insurance carrier frowned upon consumption as well. When discussing the problem I brought up that guns and alcohol together present a bad visual to the public. Most agreed.~Muir

here in the UK so much is talked about how we present our chosen sport, our public conduct and perception , even our comments on here are questioned,, it seems utter madness to condone or take part in drinking alcohol whilst in the possession of any firearm.
