Calton Moor range

Well lads and lasses I’ve had a little trip out today to Calton moor Range to test various bullets through my rifle but also a bit of practice.I arrived at 9.15am and was met by mike who had the craic about what I wanted to achieve ect and then we hit the range Mike put three rounds through just to test my zero and prove that my rifle was capable of a lot more than I was lol.As soon as I took the rifle and fired three shots Mike said straight away you do a bit of shotgun shooting don’t you? Yes was my reply how did you know, your trying to shoot the rifle like a shotgun we need to sort that out , also that guns to small for you and off he popped back to his house.Within minutes he returned with an extension to my stock and set about fitting it .Once he had it fit he then went through the correct way to shoot a rifle or at least pull the trigger and had me shoot another group of three all three I may add within a thumbnail on the target. We then tried various ammo to see what suited my rifle and tbh it was all as good as each other I’ve a rifle that isn’t a fussy eater happy days.Well that is it end of story a truly worthwhile morning spent with a man that really does know his onions I thoroughly enjoyed today and will certainly go back just for another do at the range a great place just to throw some lead about. Thanks again to Mike and Jan for a great bit of advice and help and another good thing it’s wild boar for tea came away with an armful of his wild boar so it’s made the journey all the more worthwhile.would recommended this range to anyone from just target practice to ironing out those little issues that you think you didn’t have.

I must admit the post heading got me interested enough to look where in the country this range was, it’s in beautiful Derbyshire, not a million miles away, looks to be a great set up with facilities for most everything you can think of.
Looking through all the site headings l noticed on the ‘Range’ a guy shooting prone with a Swedish Mauser Sniper rifle, they certainly cater for everything, maybe one day I’ll make the trip down there.

The contact page says Swinscoe Ashbourne Derbyshire, the last time l was in Ashbourne it was still in Derbyshire, but thanks for correcting me!

Definitely Staffordshire. Ignore the website. Ashbourne is in Derbyshire but you have to cross the river on the A515 and that’s the county boundary. I should know having lived right on the bridge.

Mike is one of life's characters,I shot a couple of Reds with him way back, which set me on the road to deer stalking.
Mike is a good guy enjoyed my time with him, knows is stuff.
his tunnel range was a great place to set up your rifle and load build.
bally.

Thank you for that we all learn something every day. I’ll be sure to remember that if ever l make the trip.
