Hello all,

I appreciate its been mentioned on here more than once already but seen a few mixed opinions and varied feedback.

I am also aware that there has been more than 1 dubious syndicate pop up over the years asking for a lot of money for very little in the way of stalking.

So would like to know please if anyone here has any first hand experience with Capreolus Club that can offer advice if it is worth joining or not? I have recently just lost my Sika permission in Purbeck due to a change in land ownership and have just one small farm with Roe left plus the odd invite. I don't do as much as I used to but would like to have some varied permissions to get out to and don't want to spend my free time dealing with the rejection of door knocking and dropping off cards to landowners at random.

I am DSC1, Lantra HD and have had open FAC for stalking for over 20 years. Am OK with their annual subs as advertised and would be looking primarily at the Hampshire/Wiltshire areas more than anything else.

Any advice or info much appreciated. If any members don't want to mention anything publicly please feel free to PM me on here.

Best regards,
Alex

I'm in the same boat, but not looking at the Capreolus club.
I seem to remember David Hooton making noises re changes to controlling / managing deer but nothing seems to have come about. Is David on these boards?

I shot foxes for years which opened up doors no end, they are not the "Kings Deer" but keep your eye in and are not as easy as people think.
One farm as example who has a big shoot I still shoot foxes for today I was beating on a second farm (small shoot) so the guns and beaters were all in the same area for food. The shoot owner called me over..Alan this is Tim...best man for a fox
So went over in the week and did a gaiter drive of the 500 acres...
Shot a lot of foxes for 3 years then the muntjac turned up then the fallow turned up...Just through shooting foxes

tbh my money is it won't be your thing but better than sitting at home.

Good luck

Tim

The Capreolus Club produces some excellent Stalking video's you can subscribe to FOC.
It seems a very smart well run outfit for those who can afford it and for those who need a lot of hand-holding to get into a deer (no insult intended...) - but I have no personal experience of their guiding/membership.

As said, the have some good videos online. I think that the thing that puts most people off it is their prices but for some people it just doesn't make economical sense to go round knocking on doors or shooting foxes for years to get stalking permission.
You have said that you are OK with their fees so I hope you get some feedback from someone who has dealt with them.

Just book days imo , if its not an honest set up dont go twice . Never return if you dont see deer thats not actually on the land your stalking that day.
I have a fair bit of ground foc, but with the nature of stalking get a few blank trips, If I get the feeling it is going to be a blank trip I bail out 30 mins and check out other stands on the way out as good intel is the key.
I have lined up what would be a good days pigeon shooting to see the line change as the next door farm cutting rape..
Go to shoot the rape and they have ripped it up...Never given up yet. :tiphat:

Many thanks to everyone who has replied.

I appreciate the time and effort but was actually looking for feedback on this specific organisation as opposed to general tips on how to obtain stalking. I have certainly done the fox, rabbit, corvid control over the decades as well as livestock help, fixing fences, bottles to farmers and even beating in my younger days to obtain shooting rights. It's a numbers versus effort game to obtain good permissions now and I simply don't have the time as I stated.

This club does appear a little better than some of the others I have come across and the feedback generally seems to identify it as a little pricey but worth it if you use it and want the convenience factor. So I think I may be tempted to give it a go for a year and see how that transpires.

Thanks again to everyone, some interesting reading replies here.

Cheers
A

I was a member a few years ago handy as I was working in London. There is some cracking ground with some good animals on it.If you can afford it and it suits them go for it.I stalked all the grounds at least once but never recognised any of it from the videos on you tube I had a sneaky suspicion that the best was kept for him. They got a fresh bit of ground near Guildford that opened on a certain date for members on a certain date but when the report email came in a good few had been taken prior to opening ??.I’m no longer a member as I now work elsewhere was it value for money no I’d say not you’d be possibly better paying for an odd stalk here or there with a local guide for less. But be careful with these also with there outing fee shot fee Caracas fee drive in my pickup fee and I’m famous fee as by the time there finished with you you’ll of bought them a new pickup the wife a new pair of tits and stroked there ego no end.

I would also appreciate some guidance, potentially looking to sign up to Capreolus or Deerhub. Are the deer numbers good on the land? Is there proper management? Any chance someone has been part of both?

I seen deer on all land of capreolus club some nice roe but I think they lost a lump of land also.

Just two decent guys can manage a vast amount of land, this is the basis why these things hardly ever work out! Far better booking the odd days here and there and don't return if you don't see deer on the ground your actually stalking , if its the arse end of one you winded or bumped or one at too long a distance and you cant get into it , that enough but if there is nothing seen do not return as its simply not land worthy of selling stalking on.
Heck yes it took me a while to learn that simple rule in my formative years!
