Case blackening?

Hello,

Just a quick one!

It’s been a while since I’ve shot .308 and today I shot in a new (to me) rifle.

Cases came out like this.

The blackening did just wipe off with a thumb but I just noticed it as an ‘unusual’ pattern.

Is it normal?

Or is something going on?

(I also cannot tell whether these are reloads which I’ve done historically, or whether they’re original Hornady AMax 168gr because everything got muddled together in a move)

That is just the powder residue escaping down the neck before the case seals/ obturates in the chamber. It's perfectly normal and often has that wavy shape.

I’d lay odds they’re reloads as that’s a lack of obduration, usually caused by light loads or work hardened cases.

If obturation wasn't happening, the cases would be smoke blackened down the case body. The case seals on the shoulder when fired & prevents gases escaping down the case body.
Looks pretty normal to me in your pic

What the photo shows is fairy typical of the residue seen even with factory loads or brand new cases with normal hand loads.
