Culling contractors

Was that really his name? Slaughter
Yes he was called Gordon Slaughter and he was a good stalker too by all accounts but must be well into his 80's now, so I'm tipping he retired from the game dealer business because of his age and not his concerns for deer welfare as what's being suggested by someone on here. I'm sure I was told that he passed away a while ago now but may be wrong.

Seems like a few stalkers are upset at local cullers, do you want us to bring our helicopters after the lads finish the tahr cull.

I can assure you 100% Gordon retired because he was over 70 and tired , he’s been lifting heavy deer all his life , unknown to many he had a daughter to his NZ wife ( half his age maybe ) and his daughter must be about 6 so maybe that’s how he was tired out😉, in fact I’ve got a picture of him lifting a couple of my stags into his van on his last run down here . So he ain’t dead lads and was trying to get back to NZ to retire . As for SDoos comments on contractors I’m one at weekends working for a mate and we travel far out into the mountains and hills and cull deer legally, quickly , and humanly . Calf first if possible then hind , NO DEER are ever left to wrought , if you don’t have a dog you don’t go ,and if you do get a runner then you go after it ( copper ) 😁 . There might be chancers out there but I can assure everybody we are accountable for every bullet we fire and accountable for every beast because no deer no money for both .

I know people who are contractors and shoot up to 30 and accept 10 wounded will ‘get away’ but the 20 are good stats and the 10 that got away are not reported
Then the people you know are not contractors they are ar*****es that cannot shoot and have no respect for their quarry. Certainly not professional culling contractors.

Gordon Slaughter from Fyne Game saw this coming years ago, he told me about the numbers of deer coming in, the badly shot, the fawns, etc. He said “tell you what, I’ll not be in business in 5 years from now because there will be no deer left!”. Guess what, business folded and got sold this year
Gordon did a fair bit of contract culling for
Tillhill back in the day so a bit of pot calling the kettle black if that's actually what he said.

That story can’t be right!! There’s no money in leaving deer on the hill that’s been shot!!! Contractors are mostly doing it for money so why would they leave them after being shot??The wrm would soon hear about it and you would be sacked on the spot!
you are joking right? what about the well publicized account of red deer being slaugfhtered on john muir trust land and left to rot? How about the estates of a certain rich european landowner, who wishes his estates to be rewildered. he was one of my neighbours in wester ross. The deer on his land were shot by contractors, and they were very efficient at it. But the left them on the hill to rot, they got their wages from him.

Not fls Scotland contractors though I bet! Sounds like cowboys for hire!! There’s not a deer manager/ contractor worth there weight in salt would do that. But yes I did read about it and was disgusted

No Problem.

SWS I believe the figures have been static at around 8K that includes Roe and Red this has been like that for the last 10 years so sustainable.
I would have no doubt you could put in a FOI to the Deer hub and they would give you the figures, nothing to hide..
Hi Griff, please excuse my ignorance, but could you do your best to answer the following;
so that figure of 8K beasts, is that just for Scotland?

What would you say the monetary value is of these beasts to the game dealers? £400K - £500K?

Whatever it is, who pockets that money?

How do the ‘experts’ know that this level of culling is sustainable if they are only working on estimated populations?
I remember similar statements made by the fishing industry years ago regarding cod/salmon stocks.

Do you think there is a danger that by ‘hammering’ deer populations in certain areas it not only allows more plantations but more housing development, etc?

These are genuine questions and I would be interested in your opinions.

Cheers
Gareth

I’m sure there’s nothing that Griff or any other ‘experienced and well informed’ person could say that is not already public information, but I would rather have it from ‘the horse’s mouth’ if that’s alright with you?

Aye and you're getting same sort of reaction if you were to start a thread titled 'Who works as an escort/callgirl?' on Mumsnet.

Discretion is never a bad thing.
